Our December 2016 Featured Instructor of the Month is Derrek Hofrichter of East Valley Krav Maga in Tempe, AZ!
Derrek Hofrichter founded East Valley Krav Maga (EVKM) in 2011, which is located in Tempe, Arizona. As the Chief Instructor at EVKM he oversees a staff of 15 instructors and over 40 Krav Maga classes each week. In 2014, EVKM was named the Krav Maga Alliance school of the year.
He began his Krav Maga training in 2002 in Washington, DC, where he fell in love with Krav Maga from his very first class. His first instructor certification was in 2005, and since then has completed many certification courses and currently is a 2nd Degree Black Belt under Krav Maga Alliance founder John Whitman. He is also a member of the Krav Maga Alliance Training Team and has traveled to Israel twice for training, most recently earning a Senior Krav Maga Instructor diploma from the Wingate Institute in Netanya, Israel.
In addition to his Krav Maga instruction, Derrek enjoys motivational speaking and frequently speaks at events and to groups, corporations and non-profits about the power of attitude by combining self-defense, Krav Maga, and motivational philosophy. Derrek is also often asked to appear on TV and other media outlets in the Phoenix, Arizona market to share his message of self defense and Krav Maga.

What does a Krav Maga Alliance training weekend look like?
Knife defenses against attacks at close range using multiple aggressive, chopping stabs made by non-compliant attackers . Close quarters gun fights starting with the pistol holstered. Hand to hand fights for control of the gun against a resisting opponent. AR-15 and AK-47 training from various positions, transitioning from standing to prone and back up. General rifle training from inside 25 meters (because, unless you are a soldier in combat or a law enforcement sniper, your need to shoot another human being from a a greater distance is essentially non-existent).
This was the training regimen at Trial By Firearms 2016: Higher Power. Attendees ranged fro absolute Krav Maga beginners to high level black belts, from firearms novices to active duty SWAT team members. They came together to receive training from some of the highest level Krav Maga and firearms experts in the world.
Over the years, KMA Founder John Whitman has trained numerous actors for their fake fisticuffs in the film world.
Recently, KMA Manager Rachel Greenbaum had the pleasure to train Aubrey Plaza and Natasha Lyonne for the movie "Addicted to Fresno!"
Also recently, John Whitman and Alliance Instructor Louis Tanguay trained NCIS LA star Bar Paly in some Krav Maga style throws and weapons defenses.
Ivo's extensive martial arts background spans three decades and starts in Bulgaria. He started training in Sambo and Kyokushin Karate in 1985 and hasn't stopped adding to his martial arts knowledge since. Moving to the United States in 1993 has opened the door to many more opportunities for expanding on his skillset. He's earned black belts in Sambo, Karate, Judo, Savate, Taekwondo (3rd degree) and Bando. Presently Ivo is training in Jiu-Jitsu, Inosanto Kali, Jeet Kune Do, and Silat.
He's a red tassle in Muay Thai and has recently earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga under John Whitman.
Ivo has been in the ring more than a few times with competitions in Judo (4-0), MMA (14-0), Muay Thai (11-0), Kickboxing (3-1), Taekwondo (85-8). He is also a National Champion in Savate Boxe Francaise.
Krav Maga, according to Ivo, is like a gateway to all martial arts. Once you grasp its potential it's like a lightbulb goes on: everything else becomes so much easier to retain. Congratulations to Adam Mrocki from Krav Maga Evolution in Moorabbin, Victoria, Australia!
From the age of eight, Adam has been involved in martial arts. He began his training in Kung Fu and progressed to Choi Kwang Do, then Krav Maga in 2002. He moved to England in 2011 and underwent the recruitment process for acceptance into the Royal Marines Commando Unit, and upon his return to Australia he began teaching at a local Krav Maga school. He was soon promoted to Chief Instructor – developing and teaching classes for men, women and children, as well as instructor training. Adam also spent one year training under John Whitman (pictured) at Krav Maga Alliance in California and is a Level 6, Black Belt, Krav Maga Alliance Instructor. He has also recently been awarded "Train the Trainer" status by the head of Krav Maga Alliance, John Whitman, allowing him to train other Krav Maga Instructors. Adam has also spent countless hours training at the Gracie Academy, home of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is a certified Gracie Jiu Jitsu Instructor and teaches our Bullyproof, Gracie Combatives and Master Cycle classes.
