Drill: Groups 2, Striker, Pad holder (Kick shield) + Roaming Attackers. Strikers work freestyle upper body strikes (Straights, Hammers, Elbows) to pad. Roaming attackers apply Sweep to Striker. Striker Fall Breaks into Ground Position. Pad holder circles and moves in for Ground Front Kicks, upon backing away, Striker Getups and returns to freestyle strikes.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A3)
Hook Punch
Focus Mitt Drill: Mitt holder throws looping hook with either left or right. Striker bobs & weaves, then throws combo 6 or  7 to counter.
Defense vs. Low Round Kick (adsorbing & shin block)
Sparring Drill: 1-for-1 partners take turns either throwing a hook or a low round kick. Defender either bobs & weaves or uses a kick defense. In either case, defender should counter with either combo 6 or 7.

ADVANCED CLASS (A3)
2 Front Kicks with a switch
2 Back Kicks with a switch
Machine Gun Takedown (lifting & leverage on neck variations)
Circle-of-Death: 1 Defender, rest of class attacks. Pad holders approach from front or rear holding for 2 front or back kicks with a switch. Gunmen use appropriate attack angles (covered during lesson) for machine gun takedown.

Belt Drill

Wrist Releases (only do one or two)

360 Defense (after basic defense, add knees or punches)

Drill: attacker makes wrist grab; defender uses soft technique to release wrist; SOMETIMES attacker then makes a 360 attack; defender must defend and finish

Choke from Behind

Drill: attacker makes Choke from Behind, defender defends; during counters, attacker steps back, then makes 360 attacker; defender makes 360 defense and finishes with counter attacks.

 

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A3)

Focus Mitts: Combinations 6 and 8 (focus on right lead)

Drill: Light striking on the pad with straight punches; on the pad holder’s command (“Go”) burst in with Left/Righ/Right Elbow 3x aggressively, then move back out and continue with light strikes.
360 Defense
Choke from the Front (2-handed)
Drill: Start with packages in hand and eyes closed, attacker either makes a choke from front or gives a verbal signal and makes 360.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A3)
Focus Mitts- Hook Punch
Combination- Cross/Hook/Cross
Focus Mitts with Disturbing- Pad holder stikes partner continuously while partner covers and absorbs; when pad holder slaps mitts together, the partner makes Cross/Hook/Cross Combination, then the pad holder goes back to striking. This drill should be very fast and aggressive.
Defense v. Low Round Kick (Absorb & Shin block)
Defense v. Front Kick (redirect & stopping)
Drill: defender eyes closed, vision drill, recognize Low Round kick or Front Kick

Thai pad Drill: Groups of 3, two with thai pads; striker must make combinations while moving to keep second pad holder “lined up” so the striker deals with one threat at a time; now and then, the second pad holder jumps in and becomes the first pad holder; Black Belts do this from an opposite stance.

Drill: attacker is on top in guard; defender kicks off from guard; attacker stands up, grabbing defender’s foot; defender makes the Foot Grab defense.

Drill: eyes closed; partner either pushes, defender opens eyes and makes punch combination OR partner attacks with Bearhug and defender must defend appropriately.

Thai Pads – basic combinations

Drill: groups of 3, two with thai pads; striker must make combinations while moving to keep second pad holder “lined up” so the striker deals with only one at a time; now and then, the second pad holder jumps in and becomes the first pad holder; BLACK BELTS do this from an opposite fighting stance.

Stick- Overhead defense

Drill: Defender starts on their knees, attacker gives a verbal signal and makes an Overhead Stick attack, defender must get to his/her feet as quickly as possible and make an aggressive defense

BEGINNER CLASS (A2)
Straight Punch with Advance
Straight Punch with Retreat
Round Kick
Drill: 1 pad holder; 1 striker. Partners make two lines at one end of the mat. Striker makes Straight Punch with Advance all the way up the mat. On reaching the end, Striker makes 2 round kicks right, 2 round kicks left, then Straight Punch with Retreat all the way back, finishing in a sprawl. Partners switch and attempt to get maximum rounds in 2 minutes.

Ground – Side Kick
Drill: Half the class has curved kick shields. Students randomly scatter the pads across mat. On instructor's call of "GO!" students begin running in random directions anywhere on mat. On instructor's call of "DOWN!" students who touch a curved kick shield first get to throw Ground and Pound strikes and students who didn't get a pad must do burpees until instructor calls "TIME!" at which point students doing burpees get in Ground – Side Position. Students with pad make a verbal cue to a student in Side Position and come in for Side Kick from the Ground. Drill resets with everyone back to running immediately after Side Kick is made.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A2)
Defense v. High Round Kick (2 and 3 points)

Thai Pads and Shin guards: 3 minute rounds
Round 1: Basic combinations + Pad holder can throw a High Round Kick at any time. Striker defends by 2 or 3 point block OR covering.
Round 2: Same as Round 1 + counters. If high round kick is to Striker's rear side, Striker counters with a 6 (cross/hook/cross). If high round kick is to Striker's lead side, Striker counters with a 7 (lead hook/cross/lead hook).
**Note: have students keep shin guards on for the remainder of class to ease transition into final drill.**
Inside Defense v. Straight Punch Low (quick review)
Reverse Headlock Standing
Drill: A and B are touching shoulders. A can attack B with Straight Punch Low. If A touches B's stomach, B gets in position and A applies Reverse Headlock Standing. B defends and both students return to the drill.
Final Drill: Same as previous drill but now A can attack B with High Round Kick as well.

ADVANCED CLASS (A2)
Thai Pads

Knife – defense v. straight stab
Knife – defense v. forward slash
Half the class has curved kick shields and the other half has a knife. Students randomly scatter the pads and knives across mat. Drill: 1 attacker, 1 defender. Attacker has tombstone pad available nearby. Defender stands in passive stance with eyes closed. Attacker has the option to bump defender from behind with tombstone and hold for elbow 4 or 5, headlock from behind, or verbally get defender's attention before bursting in with low straight punch.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A2)
Ground - Side Mount Position and Strikes
Ground - Side Mount to Full Mount
Ground - Side Mount Knee to Belly (disengage)
Drill: Groups of 3. 2 attackers, 1 defender. Both attackers should have kick shields available. Defender starts in mount on first attacker, works to side mount (showing strikes), then disengages using knee to belly. Second attacker is holding a kick shield for combatives. Defender throws flurry of various combatives until the pad holder calls, "DOWN!". Attacker does 1 burpee while pad holder ditches the pad and lays down on the ground. Defender gets into mount on 2nd attacker and the drill repeats going back and forth between the two attackers. Note: Attackers should offer enough resistance when mounted to make transitions difficult, but not impossible.

Round Kick - practice forward and rear leg; with forward leg, discuss options of stepping into the kick v. switch kick, and practice both

Combo #1K and 2K (left/right round kick and left/right/left round kick)

Drill: eyes closed; attacker either pushes from the front and defender makes combo #2 OR the attacker makes Choke from Behind with a Push

 

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A2)

Drill: light Defense Front Kick to opponent's body (no pad); opponent falls down; defender drops into Side Control, makes some strikes, then makes Arm Lock.

 

ADVANCED CLASS (A2)

Ground - Hands Pinned Together (snow angel)

Ground - Hands Pinned Together Above Head (trap and roll)

Fighting Stance and movement (front, back, left, and right)
Follow the leader – Round 1 partner A moves forward, rearward, or to the side; partner B follows, keeping orientation and distance constant. Instructor calls “switch.”
Punches – left/right combination
Follow the leader – round 2: same as before, but partner A has focus mitts and holds for left/right combo. Round 3: now the instructor can call “sprawl” or “go.” On “go,” both partners run across the room to the furthest wall from their current position, do 3 burpees, then find their partner and resume the drill.
Inside Defenses

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A2)
Focus mitt combinations (3×1.5 min rounds), 30 second “rest” between rounds AMRAP burpees

Defense v. Standing Reverse headlock
Drill: 3 people. 1 focus mitt holder, 1 striker, 1 attacker. Striker throws combinations at focus mitts (called by focus mitt holder), mixing in inside/outside slap kicks. Attacker verbalizes “Threat!” placing a hand on the striker’s shoulder and signaling them to bend forward at the waist to allow the attack to come on. Defender immediately performs defense technique and then continues with focus mitt combinations.

ADVANCED CLASS (A2)
Warm up – jogging with periodic rolls (forward and backwards), fall breaks, and takedown shoots. Compete to see who has the highest dive roll over tombstone pads
Scissor round kick
Jumping round kick
Review beginner and intermediate self defense (chokes, bear hugs, headlocks, etc.) with light resistance
Sweeps with forward kick and heel kick
Continue beginner and intermediate self defense but under heavier resistance and defender must end with sweep or takedown
