Drill: Distance Continuum: Pad holder begins at long range for Front Kick to a Vertical Target, then steps in for Front Kick Groin, a small step for Palm Heel Strike, and then finally into close range for Elbow 1.
Drill: Distance Continuum 2: After moving from long range into close range, pad holder will move back out again; Elbow 1 to Palm Heel Strike to Front Kick Groin to Front Kick to a Vertical Target.
Choke from the Front (2-handed)

Drill: A/B Drill: A's are roaming attackers and can make Choke from the Front or Choke from the Front with a Push. Defenders must threat discriminate and respond accordingly.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS
Focus mitts; 2 minute rounds

Round 2: Add combination 8 (Rear uppercut/Lead hook/Cross) and 9 (Lead Uppercut/Cross/Hook)

Reverse Headlock Standing
Drill: A can attack B with a straight left punch, a straight right punch, or a straight punch to the body. If A manages to touch B's stomach with the Straight Punch Low, B leans forward and A applies Reverse Headlock Standing. B makes defense and partners immediately return to drill.

ADVANCED CLASS
Thai Pads; 3 x 3 minute rounds

Round 2: 2 kicks for every combo with a kick

Knife--Defense v. Downward Stab
Drill: A/B Drill: B's are standing with eyes closed. A's can make verbal cue at a distance for Knife--Kick from Distance or begin (safely) making contact with training knife for Downward Stab.

Drill: A/B. A's are roaming attackers and can apply Headlock from Behind or push with pad for 10 palm heel strikes. Switch roles.
Drill: A/B meets G&P: A’s begin mounted on pads doing non-stop ground and pound. B’s are roaming attackers and can either apply (safely!) Headlock from Behind, and A must defend OR B pushes A off pad, forcing A to make Back Position and Tactical Get-Up.

Defense v. Hook (covering)
Focus mitts
Round 1: Basic combinations. Mitt holder can throw the jab, Striker slips and comes back with a 6. Mitt holder throws the cross, Striker slips and comes back with a 7
Round: Basic combinations. Striker covers against the left hook and comes back with a 7 or can cover against the right hook and comes back with a 6.
Round 3: Basic combinations. Now Striker can slip the straight punch or cover against the hook and throw designated counters.
Advanced Preview: Gun – 2 handed cupping technique
Drill: Groups of 3; 1 focus mitt holder; 1 striker (no gloves); 1 attacker. Focus mitt holder and Striker follow Round 3 from above. Attacker can push or verbal cue. Striker faces them and Attacker holds for Gun – 2 handed cupping technique. After defense, Striker immediately returns to pads.

ADVANCED CLASS
Mouth of Hand Punch
Chops (inside and outside)
Drill: Target recognition on pad. Pad holder can hold for 2 hand combatives, round kick with either leg, Front Kick Groin followed by Mouth of Hand Punch, or Chops (inside or outside).
Sweep with Heel Kick.
Sweep with Forward Kick.
Cavaliers 1-4
Drill: A/B Drill: A's attack B's with any techniques from levels 1-3. B's make the defense and where appropriate, show Sweep with Heel Kick or Sweep with Forward Kick or control attacker with a Cavalier 1-4.

Basic Take Down Defense/Spinning on center line
Drill: 3ppl/1 Striker/1 Pad Holder/1 Attacker
Striker; Thai Clinch position delivering non-stop Knee strikes, the attackers goal is to flank the striker and tag them. Striker; Spins on the Center Line keeping the attacker between him/herself. Pad holder should sporadically change levels to simulate a takedown.

Ground – trap and roll

Ground – elbow escape

Drill: Defender mounts a large pad-ground and pound. Attacker; safely tackles defender off the pad and mounts them (for the sake of the drill, defender will allow the attacker to mount), making it very challenging for the defender to gain a better position. Defender; has to gain a better position using trap and roll defense OR elbow escape, get back on the pad and continue with strikes.

ADVANCED CLASS

Basic Takedown Defense
Drill: Pad holder calls any number 1-6 and Striker makes that many punches to pad.
Drill: Same as previous drill with Striker adding an Elbow 1 after completing number of straight punches.
Drill: Same as previous drill but when Striker completes straight punches followed by Elbow 1, pad holder shows Takedown attempt by trying to touch their shoulder to Striker's torso. Striker makes Basic Takedown Defense and counters with 2 knees.
Choke from the Front (2-handed)
Choke from the Front with a Push
Drill: Dive for the Pads: Have partners line up facing each other at the center of the mat with the pad between them. Partners should be equidistant from the pad, with elbows on knees. On instructor's call of "GO!" students attempt to touch the pad first. Whoever can get it first gets to be the attacker for Choke from the Front (2-handed), Choke from the Front with a Push, or holding for 20 straight punches.

*Play with variations of distance (3 steps away, at opposite ends of the mat) and how they must get there (begin on stomach facing away from pad, bear crawl, army crawl, etc.). Rotate one line at regular intervals to allow for different match-ups.*

INTERMEDIATE CLASS
Inside Slap Kick
Outside Slap Kick
Drill: Combative Lines: Partners with curved kick shields line up on one line, Strikers across from them. Each pad is a station, and pad holder is always holding for that combative. Striker throws that combative non-stop as hard and fast as possible and will rotate through each station. Time domain and number of combative stations depends on number of students in class. 1 minute or less per station. You are shooting for about a 5 minute round of striking for each group, so remove/add stations as needed. Combative stations:
-Inside Slap Kick
-Outside Slap Kick
-Straight punches
-Front kick groin
-2 round kicks right, 2 round kicks left
-Knees
-Forward hammerfists/downward hammerfists
-2 punches and a push up
-Burpee/plyometric station if class is odd-numbered
Ground – elbow escape
Ground – guard reversal
Drill: Groups of 3; 1 attacker, 1 defender, 1 pad holder. Defender lays down and Attacker can mount with resistance for Elbow Escape from Mount or can get in Defender's guard for Guard Reversal. Pad holder will count how many seconds it takes for Defender to improve position. Defender gets up and throws non-stop hand combatives to pad for however long it took them to improve ground position. (Pad holder calls "TIME!" when appropriate.) After striking, Defender resets drill by laying down on ground.

ADVANCED CLASS
Thai Pads
Round 1: Free work; all combinations including knees, elbows, and kicks
Round 2: Opposite stance
Round 3: Puke Round! 30 seconds left/right combination for power, 30 seconds clinch knees, 30 seconds round kick to a sprawl, 30 seconds speed punches
Gun from the Side, in Front of the Arm
Knife – defense v. downward stab
Drill: A/B Drill with Attacker applying either Gun from the Side, in Front of the Arm or Knife, Downward Stab. Have attackers sometimes begin stabbing with training knife (safely!) while Defender's eyes are closed. Defender should make defense as soon as possible.

Drill: Finding your range. 1 kick shield holder and 1 striker. Strikers work at closing the distance. Start by delivering a front kick to vertical target, followed by straight punch combo 2, 3, or 4, followed by control position and 2-3 knee strikes. Then striker disengages by pushing the pad holder backwards into kicking range and repeats the drill.
Choke from behind with a push
Drill: A/B drill. Group A stands in passive stance with eyes shut, Group B attacks Group A individuals randomly with choke from behind with a push. Groups switch roles next round.

INTERMEDIATE
Bobbing/weaving/slipping punches
Drill: Head movement. 1 striker, 1 defender. Striker throws non-stop flurry of random punches slowly (as if shadow boxing). Defender must use head, body, and foot movement to evade punches. Striker will always be advancing toward defender to keep them in range of punches.
Defense vs hook punch (extended & covering)
Drill: Same as previous drill, now add in hook defenses.
Reverse headlock (guillotine choke) standing
Drill: A/B drill. Group A in passive stance with eyes shut (slightly bowing forward for the sake of the drill), Group B attacks Group A individuals randomly with reverse headlock standing. Groups switch roles next round.

ADVANCED
Sweep with a heel kick
Drill: Any lower level self-defense ending in control position. Introduce heel kick sweep into control position combatives.
Sweep with a forward kick
Drill: 1 aggressor, 1 victim, 1 superhero. Aggressor starts berating victim verbally (from outside striking range. Superhero identifies physically aggressive posturing and sweeps aggressor from behind with a forward kick
Knife defense vs downward stab
Drill: A/B drill. Group A stands in passive stance with eyes shut, Group B attacks Group A individuals randomly with downward stab. Defender should drop the knife at random (appropriate) times during defense (initial counter-punch, during combatives, or keep it until defender performs takeaway). Groups switch roles next round.

Drill: slow work; feel the difference between a static choke or a choke with a push

Backward Roll

Drill: partner holds focus mitts; defender starts in a crouched position; defender makes a backward roll, then comes up and works Combo #6 until the partner resets

Advancing Front Kick

Advancing Round Kick (like front kick) — emphasize using the ball of the foot

Choke from Behind with a Pull — discuss the possibility of using Round Kick with the Ball of the Foot

Focus Mitts: Striking when in Someone’s Guard

Drill: using guard to make striking difficult; make hand defenses AND push the attacker away with hips or pull him in close
