Focus Mitts: Combos 1-4/cover v. hook/cross hook or hook cross; for example, if pad holder calls for Combo #1, he will catch the punch and make a hook with his free hand; striker must recoil his punch and cover, then give Cross/Hook as a counter.  If pad holder calls for Combo #2, he will catch the left/right, then make a hook with his free hand; striker must recoil his punch and cover, then give Hook/Cross as a counter, etc.

Defense v. Low Round Kick (shin block)

Focus Mitts (both participants need shin guards); Combos 1-4, pad holder throws low round kick after striker makes combo

Drill: pad holder moves around and gives targets for Left/Right or Front Kick Vertical Target.  Sometimes after the Front Kick, the pad holder says "Down!" and the defender must drop down into Ground Back Position. Pad Holder moves around and Defender follows.  Pad holder moves forward and Defender kicks, then gets up.  Do at least 7 repetitions before switching.

Defense v. Low Round Kick (shin block)

Bearhug Front, Arms Free

Ground - Hip Escape from Side Control (go to full guard)

Ground - Arm Bar (emphasize the after the arm is broken, the defender should kick the head and get up)

Drill: Light sparring, open hands. Partner A uses hands only, but Partner B can also make low kicks. Partner A must defend low kicks with Shin Block. Partner B can also say "Clinch" and move on for Bear Hug Front, Arms Free. Partner B can also say "Down" and Partner A must drop down and give Side Control, then escape from Side Control and make Arm Bar. Do at least 7 repetitions before switching.

Punches and Elbows to Tombstone Pad

Ground - Side Control (review)

Ground - Hip Escape from Side Control (kick and get up instead of pulling guard) (review)

Drill, Group of 3: Non-stop punches and elbows to pad; third person calls "time" and then the defender and the third person clinch; third person makes Hip Throw and gets Side Control; defender does Hip Escape from Side Control, kicks, and gets back up and begins punching again.  Do at least 7 reps before switching. This should be tiring!

Gun from Behind, Touching

Drill (if there is time): repeat the drill above, but sometimes the third person threatens with a gun instead of calling "time."

 

BEGINNER CLASS

Straight Punches

Drill: A/B Drill — one person in the middle, 2 pad holders, one at each end of the room. One holds for punches (A), the other for Front Kick Vertical Target (B); instructor calls out where to go, and the person in the middle sprints there and strikes.

For added difficulty, include a sprawl in the middle of the room every time they run

Round 3: Add opposite elbow after combination (8 = Right Uppercut/Left Hook/Cross/Left Knee/Right elbow and 9 = Left Uppercut/Cross/Left Hook/Right Knee/Left Elbow)

ADVANCED CLASS

Axe Kick

Partners; 1 curved kick shield.

Round 1: Basic target recognition for 2 hand combatives, knee, FKVT, round kick, or FKG. Pad holder can hold in any order, but for safety will not hold for the same combative twice in a row.

Round 2: Add axe kick after FKG

Round 3: Add sprawl on instructor’s call. On instructor’s call of “DOWN!” Pad holder drops pad on ground and Striker makes nonstop Ground and Pound strikes until instructor calls “TIME!” Striker and pad holder immediately return to Target Recognition.

Knife Upward Stab

Knife Upward Stab v. Left Handed Attacker

Drill: defender stands with eyes closed; attacker gives verbal signal and attacks with right or left handed upward stab.

Movement – step and pivot left

Drill: Groups of 3. 1 striker, 1 attacker, 1 focus mitt holder. Striker and focus mitt holder free work (striker bare handed). Attacker randomly grabs striker’s hair from side or rear. Striker defends, then returns to pad work.

ADVANCED CLASS
Thai Pads from opposite stance: Round 1 – From regular stance, strikers throw any combos that require a switch kick (2K, 4K, etc.). Round 2 – Strikers throw those same combinations, but deliver a cross or uppercut instead of a kick. Round 3 – Same lead combinations, but after the switch strikers deliver combo 6 or 8 immediately from their switch stance.

Drill: one attack/one defend, low kicks

Drill: groups of 3; one attack/one defend low kicks; at any time, second attacker gives a verbal signal and makes a straight punch from the side; defender makes an outside defense, counters, then returns to defend against the first attacker

 

ADVANCED CLASS

Thai Pads Combos 6 & 7, emphasize high round kicks

Sliding Defense v. High Round Kick

Gun from the Side, Front of Arm

Drill: make the gun defense, emphasize attacker reacting and fighting; defender must control and give counters with knees and head butts until making the disarm

Drill: Attacker makes Downward Stab; Defender defends; attacker drops knife and transitions to Headlock From the Side (the defender might have to allow this); Defender makes Headlock From The Side, Neck Break defense

Drill: Partner calls out even numbers (mostly 2, 4, 6) and striker makes that many punches, leading with the forward hand. At least twice during the round, the partner calls out a number higher than 10.

Drill: 1 for 1 Sparring Drill- 2 rounds of 3 minutes: Combo: Jab/Cross/Hook/Low Round Kick- One partner starts the combo off, making light contact, the other partner covers, blocks, slips or catches punches, Absorbs or shin blocks the Low Round Kick and IMMEDIATELY counters with the same combo.

Thai Pads- 2-3 minute rounds-Start each round with 10 round kicks on each side. Include, elbows, knees, kicks (low & high) and Sprawls.

Drill: Padholder and striker line up on one end of the mat, with padholders on outside. On “GO!” strikers throw FKVT to pad and try to sprint to other side of room to touch a cone or landmark in the ring. If padholder touches them with pad in both hands before they touch cone, striker does to burpees. If not, padholder does two burpees.

360 defenses

Choke from the Front (2-handed)

Drill: A/B Drill. Roaming attackers can apply Choke from the Front (2-handed) or verbal cue with 360 attack.

 

INTERMEDIATE CLASS

Focus mitts and belly pad

Round 1: free work with basic combinations

Round 2: Add defensive front kick between combinations

Round 3: Add sprawls

Advanced Technique: Gun to the Side, Front of Arm

 

ADVANCED CLASS

Focus mitts and (everyone) shin guards

Goal: Working inside a longer/taller attacker

Round 1: Focus on call with hooks and uppercuts, adding in a (controlled) low round kick on holder’s call

Round 2: Whenever pad holder wants, they can throw the medium round kick. Striker performs 2 or 3 point block. Off the lead side they respond with a 9, off the rear side they come back with an 8

Round 3: Pad holder can throw a FKVT. Striker defends, clearing with their lead hand, and responds with a 10 (overhand/uppercut/overhand)

Gun from Behind (Touching)

Drill: A/B/C. A’s can make Low Round Kick, Medium Round Kick, or FKVT. B’s defend. C’s are roaming attackers and can attack any B with Gun from Behind (Touching). B’s make gun defense and immediately return to defending kicks.

Drill:Groups 2, Striker, Pad holder (Kick shield) + Roaming Attackers. Strikers work freestyle upper body strikes (Straights, Hammers, Elbows) to pad. Roaming attackers apply Sweep to Striker. Striker Fall Breaks into Ground Position. Pad holder circles and moves in for Ground Front Kicks, upon backing away, Striker gets up and returns to freestyle strikes.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS
Uppercut Punch
Focus Mitt Rounds: Round 1 – Combos 8 (Rear upper cut/lead hook/cross) and 9 (lead uppercut/cross/lead hook). Round 2 – Pad holder throws a straight punch off either arm, striker slips the punch and delivers either combo 8 or 9. Round 3 – Combo 6 + slip + Combo 8 or Combo 7 + slip + Combo 9
Ground – Side mount position and strikes
Ground – Arm lock from side
Ground – Side mount knee to belly (disengaging)
Stress drill: Groups of 3. 1 tombstone pad holder, 1 striker, 1 attacker. Striker starts in side mount position on attacker, when instructor says, “GO!” strikers have 30 seconds to execute arm lock from the side. After 30 seconds, instructor yells, “RUN!” strikers must disengage from side mount and find their pad holder somewhere in the room to deliver flurried strikes on the pad. Attackers follow strikers, and instructor calls “DOWN” after all strikers have found their pad holders for drill to immediately repeat. Note: pad holders should find a new “hiding spot” in the room each repetition.  

ADVANCED CLASS
Jumping Round Kick
Thai Pad Rounds: 3 rounds, 2 minutes each. Free work combinations, all combos requiring round kicks must be jumping round kicks
Gun to the Side in Front of Arm
Gun from Front, Pushing into Stomach
Circle-of-Death: All lower level self-defenses (Levels 1-3) + Gun from front, pushing into stomach, and Gun to side, in front of arm.

BEGINNER CLASS

Left/Right Combination

Front Kick Groin

Drill: Groups of 2, one small shield, the pad is placed in the center of the room between the two partners, partners are at opposite sides of the room facing away from the pads, doing push ups. On instructors signal "GO", they must get up, run to grab a pad. The person that grabs the pad first is either holding or punches or front kick groin. Strikers; non-stop punches or kicks until “TIME” is called. Reset & Repeat!

Ground- Getting up

Drill: Groups of 3, one small shield, Defender starts on their back, gets up and attacks the pad with straight punches, attacker; at any given time makes a headlock. Reset!

Drill: Monkey in Middle- groups of, one person in the middle; strike one pad until hit with the other pad; turn with appropriate strikes and engage that pad, etc. 75 seconds each person

Headlock- Neck break

Drill: attacker makes a headlock; the defender defends, and the two people end up on the ground; immediately, both should begin fighting for a position of dominance
