Beginner (B2)

Straight Punches
Front Kick to Vertical Target
Drill: Finding your range. 1 kick shield holder and 1 striker. Strikers work at closing the distance. Start by delivering a front kick to vertical target, followed by straight punch combo 2, 3, or 4, followed by control position and 2-3 knee strikes. Then striker disengages by pushing the pad holder backwards into kicking range and repeats the drill.
Choke from behind with a push
Drill: A/B drill. Group A stands in passive stance with eyes shut, Group B attacks Group A individuals randomly with choke from behind with a push. Groups switch roles next round.
Intermediate (B2)
Bobbing/weaving/slipping punches
Drill: Head movement. 1 striker, 1 defender. Striker throws non-stop flurry of random punches slowly (as if shadow boxing). Defender must use head, body, and foot movement to evade punches. Striker will always be advancing toward defender to keep them in range of punches.
Defense vs hook punch (extended & covering)
Drill: Same as previous drill, now add in hook defenses.
Reverse headlock (guillotine choke) standing
Drill: A/B drill. Group A in passive stance with eyes shut (slightly bowing forward for the sake of the drill), Group B attacks Group A individuals randomly with reverse headlock standing. Groups switch roles next round.
Advanced (B2)
Sweep with a heel kick
Drill: Any lower level self-defense ending in control position. Introduce heel kick sweep into control position combatives.
Sweep with a forward kick
Drill: 1 aggressor, 1 victim, 1 superhero. Aggressor starts berating victim verbally (from outside striking range. Superhero identifies physically aggressive posturing and sweeps aggressor from behind with a forward kick
Knife defense vs downward stab
Drill: A/B drill. Group A stands in passive stance with eyes shut, Group B attacks Group A individuals randomly with downward stab. Defender should drop the knife at random (appropriate) times during defense (initial counter-punch, during combatives, or keep it until defender performs takeaway). Groups switch roles next round.

Beginner (B2)
Fighting stance
Spinning on center line in fight stance
Elbows 1-3
Knees (regular and round)
Drill 1: students pair off and take turns as the attacker. Receiver acts as human punching bag and striker moves in to close range and works combinations of knees and elbows. Striker can grab, spin on center line, or any other attack they deem appropriate.
Choke from front with push
Drill 2: same as Drill 1, but attacker can choose to attack with choke from the front with a push at any time. Be careful the attacker does not walk into an elbow.

Intermediate (B2)
360 with counterattacks
Guard position and maintenance
Drill: starting from a butterfly guard or other open guard, person in top position tries to maintain their position while person on bottom tries to grab, pull, or otherwise disrupt their partner's base and bring them into a closed guard.
Ground - guard reversal
Ground - arm bar from guard
Drill 2: same as drill 1, but both partners are also playing "touching shoulders," while the person on bottom tries to reverse or submit the person on top

Advanced (B2)
Review outside defenses, inside defense w/counter
Gun from the front, in front of arm
Gun from the front, pushing into stomach
Advanced gun - from the front, assailant pushing, slapping, kicking
Drill: 3-4 pad holders surround defender and push continuously with kick shields. They can shout "here!" or "go!" to make the defender throw strikes. Another attacker can attack at any time with a gun to the front or side, with or without pushing, slapping, kicking, etc.

Drill: Defender; eyes closed defend either Choke OR make non-stop Palm heel strikes on pad when bumped by the attacker/pad holder

Drill: Groups of 3, Focus Mitts; Striker works combinations on mitts; attacker makes Choke from Behind with a Pull, defender makes a strong defense and continues working the mitts.

Thai Pads- 3 rounds of 2 minutes, (opposite stance), 200 meter run between rounds

Backward Roll

Drill: partner holds focus mitts; defender starts in a crouched position; defender makes a backward roll, then comes up and works Combo #6 until the partner resets

Advancing Front Kick

Advancing Round Kick (like front kick) — emphasize using the ball of the foot

Choke from Behind with a Pull — discuss the possibility of using Round Kick with the Ball of the Foot

ADVANCED CLASS (B1)

Focus Mitts: 2 rounds of 3 minutes each

Focus Mitts: Striking when in Someone’s Guard

Drill: using guard to make striking difficult; make hand defenses AND push the attacker away with hips or pull him in close

Groups of 2, Striker, Focus Mitt Holder. Starting facing Striker, Mitt Holder advances forward. Striker executes Retreating Eye Strike then burst forward with a Straight Punch Burst.

DRILL:

Groups of 2, Striker, Tombstone Holder. Starting facing Striker, Pad Holder advances forward. Striker executes Retreating Straight then appropriate Round Kick based on Pad position.

Headlock Rear

DRILL - FINAL:

Same as previous drill working Retreating Straight/Round Kick combo. Choose one group to attack another group. ONE person from the chosen group attacks the Striker of another group. After defending, the attacked group passes pad to the attacking group and the new group roams to attack.

Choke Rear w/ Pull

DRILL - FINAL:

Same as above, but Pad Holder can cue for Back Kick or Choke Rear w/ Pull. Choke pulls should be hard and down. If the Defender goes to the ground, attempt to conduct Backward Roll.

DRILL - FINAL: Action Movie Moment

Groups of 4, Defender, Attacker, 2 Pad Holders. Defender sets up between pad holders, Attacker with rifle standing in front. Defender sends Punch/Kick in opposite direction, then defends charging Attacker with Bayonet Defense.

Beginner (B1)

Straight Punches
Round Kicks
Drill: Cauldron. 1 tombstone pad holder, 1 striker. Round 1: pad holder calls "Punches," striker delivers combo 2. Pad holder calls "Kick," striker delivers 1 round kick (side TBD by pad holder. Round 2: all strikes double (4 punch flurry, 2 kick flurry). Round 3: all strikes triple (6 punch flurry, 3 kick flurry).
Choke from the side
Drill: 3-4 people. 1 striker, 1 tombstone pad holder, 1-2 attackers. Striker and pad holder free work straight punches and round kicks. Attacker(s) randomly choke striker from the side. Striker defends, finishes with combatives and returns to pad work.
Intermediate (B1)
Headbutts forward
Focus mitt combinations: free work combinations 1-10. Pad holder intermittently calls "Combo #, headbutt!" Striker throws combo and finishes with headbutt to focus mitt.
Ground - trap & roll
Ground - choke from full mount
Ground - headlock from mount
Drill: A/B drill. Group A lies on the ground, eyes closed. Group B randomly gets into mount and either throws light palm heel strikes, chokes, or headlocks person on the ground. Defender executes appropriate defense and finishes technique by getting to their feet before resetting.
Advanced (B1)
Jumping spinning back kick
Drill: Circle of death. 1 kick shield holder, 1 striker, 2+ attackers. Striker free works on kick shield mixing in jumping spinning back kicks. Attackers may do any Level 1 or 2 attack
Ground - guillotine from guard
Ground - defense vs guillotine from guard
Sparring: Starting in guard position, person on top tries for submission. Person on bottom tries to either improve their position or submit from the bottom. If either person succeeds in their goal, pair restarts in opposite places.

Beginner (B1)

Elbows 4-7
Drill: striker stands in the middle of a group of 3-4 pad holders. Pad holders continuously bump and disrupt the person in the middle, keeping them off balance. When one of the pad holders shouts "here!" or "go!" the defender delivers one range-appropriate strike to the pad and returns to fight stance.

Thai pad combinations with knees and elbows: pad holder calls combo 1-10 with knee or elbow variable: add knee or elbow opposite to last punch of combo
Review inside and 360 defenses, then put the defender on a wall so they cannot move. Have the attackers wear boxing gloves or focus mitts so they can hit harder and faster.

Advanced (B1)
Advancing straight punches
Drill: one partner holds focus mitt at punching distance and tries to move the pad away as soon as they see the puncher motion for a straight punch. Puncher tries to telegraph the punch as little as possible to hit the pad with straight punch. Increase the distance with each successful punch.
Gun from the front
Gun to the side of the head
Drill: defender starts on one end of the room with eyes closed in fight stance. Two pad holders with kick shields continuously bump the defender as they try to walk slowly across the room. An attacker comes up from the defender's front or side and attacks with a gun, attacks, and after a successful defense one of the padholders shouts "here!" and the defender strikes the pad while holding the gun. The padholder calls "time," the defender assesses their surroundings, drops the gun, and resumes walking across the room with eyes closed. Add strobes, loud music, or any other distractions as desired.

Beginner Class (B1)

4 Rounds of :20 sec. non-stop Hammerfist Strikes, :10 sec. active recovery (Slow strikes during the 10 sec)

Pad Holder- advance towards striker (not too fast)

Striker- Proper Get Up, once the pad holder is in kicking range, execute a Defensive front kick followed by counter attacks until pad holders calls "Time"

Intermediate (B1)

Drill: Pyramid

2pp/1 punching shield

30 sec- Non-stop strikes (punches, hammerfist, elbow, etc..)

20 sec- Rest

45 sec- Non-stop Front Kicks-Groin

20 sec-Rest

60 sec- Clinch Position- Non-stop Knee strikes

Defender makes the appropriate defense, quickly gets up, advances towards pad with non-stop counter attacks. Attacker; once again attacks defender, this time with Choke from Behind with a pull.

Advance (B1)

A/B Drill w/sprawls:

DRILL:

Groups of 2, Striker, Padholder. Begin facing each other just out of striking range. Padholder moves and Striker follows, maintaining distance. On instructor’s “GO!” cue Striker sends Straight - Advancing and continues with a burst of punches, ending by stepping offline and pivoting. Padholder reorients to square and both return to moving/awaiting next cue.

Hammerfirst - Forward

DRILL:

Same as above, but after Straight - Adv, Striker sends a burst of Hammerfist strikes before stepping offline/pivoting.

Choke Front w/ Push

DRILL - FINAL:

Groups of 3, designate A/B/C. (A) begins at one end of gym awaiting Choke Attack. (B) waiting to attack. (C) at opposite end waiting for pad cue. (B) chokes (A). After defending, (A) runs down , grabs pad and cues (C) for Straight - Adv + Hammerfist Burst. (C) steps offline and runs down to attack (B), while (A) sets up for pad cue.

Headbutt (Front, Side, Rear)

DRILL:

Groups of 3-4, Striker, Pad1, Pad2, Pad3 (Tombstones). Striker begins back against wall, Pads pressing against. Pads jostle Striker, also raising pad and cueing “HEY!” for Headbutt. Striker sends appropriate Headbutt and fights off wall/out of Pads (Note, clinching is permitted if available). After getting free, reenter Pads and reset.

DRILL:

Groups of 3-4, Defender, Pad1, Pad2, Pad3 (Tombstones). Same as above, but Pads can also drop and attack with either Choke depending on angle. NOTE: Pads should also attempt to turn Defender while jostling to create additional angles.

Review Ground Defenses:

Groups of 2. Defender lies on back. Attacker can apply any L2-L4 attack. After defense, switch roles.

DRILL - FLOW

Groups of 2, A/B. (A) on back, (B) mounts and sends strikes, chokes, or headlocks. (A) defends as necessary. After roll (B) applies Guillotine. Reset, switching starting positions.

DRILL - FINAL: Free Roll

Groups of 2 begin in various starting positions (Mount, Guard, On-belly/back, Back-to-Back, etc.). On “GO!” begin fighting for dominance/submission. 1 minute rounds, rotate partners often.

Beginner (B1)

Palm Heel Strikes

Round Kicks

Drill: Cauldron w/ palm. Round 1 – pad holder calls combo, striker performs the combo 1x. Round 2 – pad holder calls combo, striker performs the combo 2x, sprawling in between combos. Round 3 – pad holder calls combo, striker performs combo 3x, sprawling in between combos.

Headlock from Behind

Drill: A/B/C drill. Divide the class into three groups. Group A holds a tombstone pad, Group B is striking/defending, and Group C is attacking. Pad holders and strikers free work palm heel strike & round kick combinations. Attackers roam and put strikers in a headlock from behind randomly. Strikers defend, then get back to their respective pad holders. Cycle all three groups through all three stations

 

Intermediate (B1)

Reflexive defense vs front (groin) kick

Outside stabbing defense vs front (groin) kick

Drill: Free work thai pad combinations. Pad holder randomly mixes in groin kicks for striker to defend.

Choke from behind with a pull

Drill: A/B drill. Divide the class in to two groups. Group A stands on a line with eyes closed. Group B randomly attacks with choke from behind with a pull. After the round, the groups switch roles.

 

Advanced (B1)

Jumping Spinning Back Kick

Drill: Thai pads and belly pad required. Free work on thai pads, mixing in jumping spinning back kick to belly pad. Safety note: kickers should refrain from delivering kick full force in case they miss, accuracy and contact are the goal.

Long Gun from the Front – dead side

Drill: Same drill as above, this time have 2-4 students roam the room with long guns. Attackers will verbally get a random striker’s attention. Striker will perform dead side defense before getting back on the pads
