Basic Takedown Defense (changing height, moving feet)
Drill: A holds for B for Left/Right combination. At any time A can call "TAKEDOWN" and attempt to put shoulder to B's upper torso. B perform Basic Takedown Defense followed up by 2 knees.
Choke from the Front; 2 Handed Pluck
Drill: Non-compliant attacker. Class split into A's and B's. A's stand with eyes closed in neutral position. B's can attack by tapping with pad for non-stop Left/Right Combination. During flurry, B can call "TAKEDOWN" and A performs Basic Takedown Defense. B can also attack with Choke from the Front; 2 Handed Pluck and may or may not follow up with a showing takedown attempt.
Intermediate (A3)

Drill: Focus mitts: Free work on all known combinations, 1-4 or 1-10.
Drill: On combinations 2-10 have students add call of "UP" for Striker to replace last punch in combo with an uppercut, i.e. "6UP" = Cross/Lead Hook/Rear Uppercut, "9UP" = Lead Uppercut/Cross/Lead Uppercut
Advanced Preview: Knife; Upward Thrust
Drill: A/B Drill. Encourage attackers to make a realistic recoil from stab to ensure defenders bursting in far enough for control position. Attackers can increase speed of attack and attempt multiple stabs as round continues.

Drill: Group of 3. Same focus mitt/thai pad drill as above, but now 3rd person has a stick and yells “THREAT” randomly getting striker’s attention before attacking w/ baseball bat swing.

Drill: Groups of 3. 2 pad holders. 1 striker. Striker stands in center in neutral stance with eyes closed. Pad holders give a verbal cue or light push with the pad from the front, side, or behind. Striker must throw elbow in the appropriate direction, then turn toward the pad and follow up with 4 strong, fast hand combatives, either palms or punches, then resets back to neutral with eyes closed.
Drill: Same as above, except instead of only 4 hand punches/palms, striker sends non-stop hand combatives until second pad holder taps or gives verbal cue. Once striker is disrupted, they throw appropriate elbow and non-stop hand combatives until cued again. Remind students to vary the length of the strikes, sometimes letting them go for only a few strikes, other times having them work for longer.

Drill: Dizzy Drill. Groups of 3: 1 attacker, 1 pad holder, 1 defender.
Have defender stand in center with a stick. Defender holds the stick upright with one end on the mat. On instructor's "GO!" they run in a circle, spinning with their forehead touching the top of the stick. After 10-20 seconds (depending on equilibrium of the group), instructor calls "STOP!" Partners can apply Choke from the Front or tap with pad for the appropriate elbow followed up by 4 hand combatives.
Intermediate (C3)
Defense v. Low Round Kick--Shin Block
Thai Pads and Shin Guards
Drill: Combinations 1-4 with a kick. Pad holder can throw the low round kick to striker. Striker defends using the shin block.
Drill: Same as previous drill, but after performing shin block, striker touches defending leg down and then launches that same leg to return with a body level round kick to the Thai pads.
Drill: Puke round! 30 seconds power punches Left/Right combination. 30 seconds 2 round kicks right, 2 round kicks left. 30 seconds speed punches.

Drill: Circle of Death. Break class into small groups of 3 or 4. 1 defender, everyone else is an attacker. Defender stands in neutral with eyes closed. Attackers can apply Bearhug from the Front, Arms Free OR Bearhug from the Front, Lifting OR any Level 1 self defense technique.
Advanced (C3)
Focus mitts; 4 minute rounds
Round 1: Free work on the focus mitts adding Spinning Outside Slap Kick to any combination ending in hook punch (combinations 3, 7, or 9). Show students how to use the hook to cover/distract from initial step across centerline that sets up spin.
Round 2: Focus mitts in opposite stance. Spinning Outside Slap Kick from opposite stance only required for black belts and black belt candidates.

Drill: A/B Drill. A's can attack B's with any Level 1-3 self defense technique. B's finish with the initial set up for a Hip Throw when possible/appropriate.

Striker Fall Breaks into Ground Position. Pad holder circles and moves in for Ground Front Kicks, upon backing away, Striker Getups and returns to freestyle strikes.

Focus Mitt Drill: Mitt holder throws looping hook with either left or right. Striker bobs & weaves, then throws combo 6 or 7 to counter.
Defense vs. Low Round Kick (adsorbing & shin block)
Sparring Drill: 1-for-1 partners take turns either throwing a hook or a low round kick. Defender either bobs & weaves or uses a kick defense. In either case, defender should counter with either combo 6 or 7.

Stick- Overhead defense
Drill: Defender starts on their knees, attacker gives a verbal signal and makes an Overhead Stick attack, defender must get to his/her feet as quickly as possible and make an aggressive defense

If Striker can perform it in time, Striker should make a Defensive Back Kick with a Spin to belly pad. If Mitt holder is able to apply sloppy clinch, Striker maintains good footwork and attempts to swim to a good control position. When mitt holder calls "BREAK" Striker gets hands up in fighting stance and throws a Combo 8 to pads.
Bearhug Behind Arms Free
Bearhug Behind (leverage on finger)
Drill: Monkey in the Middle: 1 partner with focus mitts and belly pad; 1 attacker; 1 defender. Repeat drill from earlier on focus mitts and belly pad. Attacker can apply Bearhug Behind Arms Free. If attacker does not let go after the first few elbows, Defender makes Bearhug Behind Leverage on Finger, then returns to pads.

Focus Mitts with Disturbing- Pad holder stikes partner continuously while partner covers and absorbs; when pad holder slaps mitts together, the partner makes Cross/Hook/Cross Combination, then the pad holder goes back to striking. This drill should be very fast and aggressive.
