Left/Right Combination

Drill: pad holder moves around and calls for Left/Right combination; sometimes, after the combination, the pad holder "jabs" with the pad. The puncher must make the combination and then move out of range immediately.

Hammerfist to the Side

Drill: Monkey in the Middle -- non stop punching to one pad until a second pad holder hits from the side; the defender must make a hammer fist punch, then turn and continue striking the new target

Choke from Behind

Drill: Monkey in the Middle as above, but include Choke From Behind

 

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (D2)

Focus Mitts: Combo #2/switch stance/Left/Right Hook

A/B Drill: Group A attacks, group B defends. Defenders in passive stance, eyes shut. Attackers may either hold tombstone pads for any elbow strike (1-3) or choke defenders from the front. Note: Defenders should follow up initial elbow strike with additional combatives.

Reverse Headlock Standing
Drill: Working in pairs. 1 attacker, 1 defender. Attacker throws multiple hook punches randomly altering attacking arm, defender uses either extended or covering defenses. At any point attacker may clinch defender (throwing light knees to the body) in order to transition to reverse headlock standing. Once defender completes skill and finishes with combatives, attacker should go right back to throwing random hooks.

Drill: attacker makes Headlock From Behind; defender makes the defense; attacker steps back, then steps forward with 360 attack; defender defends, then establishes Basic Clinch position and gives knees.

BEGINNER (B2)
Elbows 1-3
DRILL:
Groups of 2 (Pad holder, Striker). Striker begins eyes closed. Pad holder pushes off balance with the pad requiring striker to take a few steps to regain balance. Striker then bursts in with straight punch burst. Once striker begins striking padholder can hold ground for striker to transition to elbows, or padholder moves back, requiring striker to continue forward with straight punches.

Front Kick Vertical Target

DRILL:
Same as above, but if the padholder moves back, the striker sends a FKVT.

Rear Headlock

INTERMEDIATE (D2)
Light Sparring:
Hands only: 30s rounds, rotating partners each round. Rest only long enough to switch partners.
Feet only: 30s rounds, rotating partners each round. Rest only long enough to switch partners.

Thai Pad Work:
Bas Combos (custom combos based on experience.)
Roundhouse kick Show & Throw. Partner holds for either side kick, striker sends.
Combos + RHK. Padholder calls combo, adds RHK to end.

Defense vs. High Round Kick (reflexive)
Defense vs. High Round Kick (2 points)
Defense vs. High Round Kick (3 points)
Defense vs. High Round Kick (covering)

Drill:
Thai Pad holder calls combos, at any point can send a high RHK. Add counter strikes after the kick defense is made.

Trigger Sparring - Step 1
Each round begins with one person designated to throw a high RHK. Other person defends and sparring round begins. Additional high RHK can be sent, but each round begins with that strike.
Trigger Sparring - Step 2
Designate A/B per group of 2. Begin sparring round. When instructor calls a letter, those who are the opposite letter raise their hand. Those who are the called letter run to someone with their hand up, face them and attack with High RHK, starting the next round.

ADVANCED (D2)
Axe Kick
Sweep with Heel Kick

Cavaliers 1-2 (Can include 3 as alternative hold, if time)
Ground Axe Kick Defense (bring hands and feet up to cover and kick upward to stop kick, similar to head stomp defense on ground.)

Flow:
Partner 1 begins in fighting stance. Partner 2 can perform either sweep or cavalier, taking P1 to ground. P2 then sends Axe Kick to P1, P1 defends.

Final Drill:
Groups of 3 (Attacker, defender, padholder). Padholder at one end of gym. Other two partners perform same flow as above. After defending Axe Kick, defender gets up and runs to pad to perform assigned combative. On instructor’s cue, roles switch. Defender takes pad, padholder runs down to attack the previous round’s attacker.

Beginner (B2)
Intro to Thai Pads
Round 1: 1-4 as palm strikes
Round 2: Add 1elbow-4elbow, 1knee-4knee
Round 3: Round 2 + on padholder’s call of “CLINCH!” add 4 clinch knees
Headlock from Behind
Drill: Groups of 3; 1 thai pad holder; 1 attacker; 1 striker/defender. Defender making combinations from Round 3 on pad holder's call. Attacker can apply Headlock from Behind at any time. Defender makes defense and returns to pads.

Intermediate (D2)
Defense v. Hook
Defense v. Uppercut
Partner drills; both partners wearing gloves and shin guards; using gloves like focus mitts
Round 1: Back and forth, 6-10
Round 2: A throws a combo from Round 1 at B, who is shelled up. B responds with a jab or a cross. A defends by inside defense, and comes back (light contact) with any 3-4 combatives. Switch roles on instructor’s call after 2 minutes.
Round 3: Now B can respond with a hook or straight punch. 2 minutes then switch

Round 4: B can respond with a straight punch, hook, or uppercut. 2 minutes then switch
Defense v. High Round Kick (2 and 3 points)
Defense v. High Round Kick (covering)

Round 5: A throws a combo from Round 1 at B, but B responds with a High Round Kick. Switch roles on instructor's call after 2 minutes.

Round 6: A throws a combo from Round 1 at B, B can respond with a straight punch, hook, uppercut, or High Round Kick
Final rounds: Isolation 3-step sparring. A makes three combatives: a straight punch, hook, uppercut, or High Round Kick at B. B defends against all three combatives and then makes three of the above combatives at A. Back and forth, switch partners as time permits.

Drill: Drive partner back with the following combatives from one end of the mat to the other, then partner groups jog back together to the starting side and switch pad: Frame-hold knees, Advancing front kick, 2 Front Kicks with a Switch (Defensive Front Kick in between to create distance), 2 straight Knees with a Switch (Defensive Front Kick in between to create distance)

Knife – defense v. downward stab
Drill: Ground, Pound, and Stab. Wearing a belly pad, A is at one end of the room with curved kick shield and knife. B is at other side of mat, eyes closed. A performs 30 Ground and Pound strikes on kick shield then picks up knife and sprints to B. A decides when to offer a verbal cue to B to open their eyes, or can choose to begin stabs with training knife to chest. If B has time, B should kick defense from a distance against the knife. Otherwise, B performs Defense v. Downward Stab. Repeat for time before switching.

BEGINNER CLASS (B2)
Basic Takedown Defense (changing height, moving feet)

Stacking Drill: 1 defender, 2 attackers. 1 attacker has a kick shield. Defender has pad holder in control position while delivering strikes. Pad holder offers moderate resistance. Additional attacker must try to run around behind defender and tag them between the shoulder blades while defender uses pad holder as a human shield.

Focus Mitt Drill: Round 1 - Slip/Combo 6 and Slip/Combo 7. Round 2 - Bob & Weave/Combo 8 and Bob & Weave/Combo 9. Round 3 - Free work combinations from previous rounds.
Inside Defense vs. Left/Right (2 inside defenses)
Inside Defense vs. Left/Right (lean back and trap)
Inside Defense vs. Left/Right (1-hand)
Stress Drill: Working in pairs. Defender starts in fighting stance w/ eyes shut. Attacker verbally gets defender's attention BEFORE bursting in with combo 2. To add difficulty have defenders start from "interview" position, then eventually passive stance.

ADVANCED CLASS (D2)
Mouth of the Hand Punch
Cavaliers 1-4
Knife - Defense vs. Straight Stab
Knife - Defense vs. Upward Stab
Drill: Working in pairs, 25%-50% speed. Defenders only focus on initial defense/counter. Attacker starts with straight stab and progressively lowers the attack until it becomes an upward stab. Have defenders understand where their personal transition point is.
Circle-of-Death Drill: 1 defender, rest of class attacks. All unarmed self-defenses from lower levels, upward stabs, and straight stabs.

BEGINNER CLASS (B2)

Front Kick Vertical Target

Drill: A/B drill -- defender must run back and forth between target A (Punches) and target B (Front Kick Vertical Target)

360

Drill: eyes closed, attacker gives verbal signal and makes 360 from different distances; defender must decide to make 360 defense OR Front Kick Vertical Target

Focus Mitts: 3 rounds of 2 minutes; sometimes the pad holder should clinch and test the puncher's footwork and balance

Sweep with Heel Kick

Drill: with focus mitts, make combinations, clinch, and sweep

Knife Downward Stab

Drill: defend Knife Downward Stab, sometimes incorporate Sweep With Heel Kick (Note: Krav Maga does not emphasize sweeps against weapons, but sometimes it can be interesting to include them!)
