Elbow #3

Groups of 3: Monkey in the middle, (approximately 1 minute unless students not getting fatigued), non-stop palm strikes on padholder #1, building up to Padholder #2 can verbal cue from behind at any time for Elbow 3. Striker makes elbow followed by 2 palm strikes and a Front Kick Groin, then returns to palm strikes on padholder #1.

Wrist releases

360 defense v. Haymaker

Drill: A/B Non-compliant attacker. Attacker makes wrist grab. Defender makes wrist release. Attacker can disengage or follow up attack with Haymaker. Defender makes 360 with follow-up combatives. Emphasize wrist releases looking non-aggressive, but shifting gears as soon as haymaker in motion.

 

INTERMEDIATE (C1)

Uppercut Punch

Uppercut Punch Defense

DRILL:

Groups of 2. Alternate between Attacker/Defender, sending Uppercut and defending.

Defense v. High Front Kick (redirecting)

DRILL:

Same as above, but Attacker can send Uppercut or High Front Kick for defense.

Knife – Straight Stab

DRILL – FINAL:

Same as above, but replace Uppercut attack with Straight Stab (both begin with knife in hand). On cue, find new partner.

ADVANCED (C1)

Gun Front 2 Handed Technique

DRILL:

Groups of 3, Defender, Padholder, Attacker. Defender sends all out strikes to Pad. Attacker approaches from either side of Pad and points gun. Defend and return to striking.

Advanced Gun Front – Kneeling Position

DRILL:

Defenders neutral/eyes closed. Attackers give verbal cue. If close enough, Defender should use 2 Hand defense. If too far away, Attacker will order to knees and approach. Once close enough, defend using Kneeling defense.

Advanced Gun Front – Mounted

DRILL – FINAL:

Defenders eyes closed, transition between standing, kneeling and laying on back. Attackers roam giving verbal/tactile cue. Defend from position appropriately and return to transitioning eyes closed.

BEGINNER CLASS (A1)
Hammerfist to the Side
Elbows 1 & 2
Drill: 2 tombstone pad holders, 1 striker. 1 tombstone pad holder begins calling combinations for striker to throw. At any point the other pad holder approaches striker from the side and either bumps them with the pad or verbally gets their attention. Striker delivers either Hammerfist to the Side or Elbow 2 and transitions towards 2nd pad holder who will now call combinations. The pad holders will repeat the process back & forth until "Time" is called.

Drill: Circle-of-Death. 1 defender, rest of class attacks. All Level 1 basic chokes and bearhugs from the front are allowed. Attacks should come in rapid succession. Encourage defenders to incorporate headbutts into their follow-up combatives once they reach control position.

ADVANCED CLASS (C1)
One Arm Shoulder Throw
Tabata Focus Mitt Rounds: 20 seconds maximum effort, 10 seconds of rest. Rounds 1-3, focus mitt holder throws 1 straight punch, striker slips and counters with either lead uppercut/cross/hook or rear uppercut/hook/cross. Rounds 4-6, focus mitt holder throws 1 looping hook, striker bobs & weaves and counters with either hook/cross/hook or cross/hook/cross.
Advanced Gun - from behind, attacker close (hug defense)

B's can give tap and A makes 6 straight punches OR apply Choke from the Front, 2 handed Pluck and then disengage after follow-up combatives OR apply Choke from the Front, 2 handed Pluck and make mimic a takedown during follow-up combatives (for safety, have students attempt to wrap high up on the waist rather than shooting low to knee level).

Intermediate (C1)
Uppercut Punch–emphasize adjusting the length of the uppercut to distance of the target; a standard close uppercut has palm facing self, if target is further away the pinky rotates out and angle of the arm becomes more obtuse to ensure striker is still making contact with first two knuckles.
Defense v. Low Round Kick (shin block)
Focus mitts and Shin guards
Round 1: Combinations 8 (Rear uppercut/lead hook/cross) and 9 (lead uppercut/cross/lead hook)
Round 2: Combinations 1-10; make the last punch of every combination an uppercut, i.e. 3 = jab/cross/lead uppercut
Round 3: Mitt holder can throw low round kick at any time. Striker makes defense v. low round kick (shin block)
Headlock from the Side
Drill: A's-B's-C's: A's are touching B's shoulders or making low round kick. B defends low round kick with shin block. C's are roaming attackers and can apply Headlock from the Side to any B.

Advanced (C1)

Long Combo! Work muscular endurance and speed by building up to the following in stages:
Jab/Cross/R Kick/Check on the rear side/Kick back with the rear leg
Block the body kick on the lead side/7
Jab/Inside defense v. the jab/Jab/Cross
Cover against hook on the lead side/Lead hook/Rear Kick
Cross/L Kick/Rear Uppercut/L Hook
Knife – defense v. downward stab

Ground - Kick Off From Guard

Drill: as above, but sometimes pad holder pushes and says "Down!" Defender must drop down. Attacker goes into guard, and defender must make Kick Off From Guard

 

ADVANCED CLASS (C1)

Thai Pads: 2 rounds of 4 minutes

One Arm Shoulder Throw

Drill Option 1 (Basic): attacker makes straight punches and defender defends; when attacker makes a 360 attack, the defender defends, then makes One Arm Shoulder Throw

Drill Option 2(Advanced): attacker makes straight punches and defender defends; attacker moves in to clinch; defender establishes 50/50 (arms over and under position), then makes One Arm Shoulder Throw.

Front Kick to a Vertical Target

Drill 1: 1 attacker, 1 striker. Attacker with kick shield advances towards defender. Defender throws front kick to vertical target and then follows up with 6 straight punches. Strikers may start from fighting stance until they’re comfortable with range, then move to passive stance. Once in passive stance, attackers should make their advance faster and faster as striker has success delivering kick.
Drill 2: Now, Pad holder should move fast enough that Striker can't always make FKVT. When attacker comes in too fast, Striker hits frame-hold position to 4 frame-hold knees.
Drill 3: 30 seconds max straight punches standing, instructor calls "DOWN" and Striker and pad holder go to 30 seconds kneeling straight punches. Instructor calls "DOWN" one more time and 30 seconds hand combatives with striker on back and tombstone holder standing over them.
Choke from Behind
Final Drill: A's-B's-C's. A's are holding for Drill 2 from earlier. B's are Strikers/Defenders. C's are roaming attackers and can apply Choke from Behind to any B.

Round 1: Basic combinations with a sprawl
Round 2: All combinations begin with a Headbutt Forward. Mitt holder should hold one mitt at very close range for headbutt and then move to mid-range for combination.
Round 3: Striker stands close to wall with eyes closed. Mitt holder can orient them in any direction, and then gives a verbal cue. Depending on where holder stands, Striker makes Headbutt Forward, Headbutt Side, or Headbutt Backward, then turns and faces and makes an Elbow 1 followed up by Combo 8 (rear uppercut/lead hook/cross).
Bearhug Front Arms Caught
Bearhug Front Arms Free (space)
Drill: Non-compliant Attacker A/B: A's are standing in neutral with eyes closed. B's are roaming attackers. B can make Bearhug Front Arms Caught or Bearhug Front Arms Free (space) OR apply any Level 1 attack and during follow up combatives, make Bearhug. A must be prepared for potential follow-up attack. Switch roles.

Advanced (C1)
Thai Pads
Round 1: All combinations
Round 2: Double the combination, i.e. when pad holder calls "2K" Striker makes a jab/cross/lead kick/jab/cross/lead kick
Round 3: Triple the combination + sprawls
Gun from the Front, 2 handed technique
Advanced Gun – from kneeling position
Drill: Ground, Pound, and Attack. A is at one end of the mat with a curved kick shield and B is stationed at opposite end with a gun on floor next to them. A makes 20 Ground and Pound strikes to pad and then sprints to B. B is doing 5 push ups and 5 air squats. If B is in push up position when A picks up gun, B makes Advanced Gun – from kneeling position. If B is doing air squats when A points gun at them, B makes Gun from the Front, 2 handed technique. After making defense, partners switch roles.
