Drill: eyes closed, pushed from any angle; give appropriate single strike (straight punch or hammerfist); after one round, repeat but give additional counterattacks

Focus Mitts: Left/Right/Right Elbow/Headbutt
Headlock from the Side
Drill: focus mitt work; assign two or three attackers to walk around, attacking with Headlock from the Side

Drill: Knife Threats, attacker struggling, punching, kicking after defender controls the knife; defender must cover his chin, move his feet, and counterattack.

Drill: straight punches & hammerfist forward, instructor yells "sprawl" many times during the round; 2 rounds each person, alternating.

Knees (emphasize both knees)
Drill - Turning Drill: eyes closed, pad holder touches defender from behind or either side; defender delivers elbow #2 or #3, then continues turning to give knees. The defender should develop the ability to strike and turn in either direction comfortably.

Focus Mitts - basic combinations
Forward Roll
Drill: Defender makes non-stop punches; pad holder should remain stationary; instructor yells "roll!" and the Defender rolls once to the left, then turns back and rolls the other way, then gets up and continues punching. For more advanced students, yell "2 rolls!" "4 rolls!" etc.

ADVANCED CLASS (A1)
Focus Mitts
Drills: Sprawls and Rolls: non-stop punching; instructor calls out "sprawl" or "roll"; the defender makes the appropriate action

BEGINNER CLASS (A1)
Knees
360
DRILL: defender's eyes are closed; attacker shoves the defender, then makes an attack with 360, left or right hand. The defender makes 360 and counters
Front Kick Vertical Target
Drill: defender's eyes are closed; attacker gives a verbal signal, sometimes from far away, sometimes close, then makes a 360 attack; the defender must decide whether to make 360 defense (if close) or Front Kick Vertical Target (if farther away)
Choke From The Front (2 hands)

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A1)
Uppercut Punch
Drill - different ranges of uppercut; very close, medium, and farther away
Combination: Left Uppercut/Left Hook
Combination: Right Uppercut/Right Straight
Choke Front (1 hand) -- variation using uppercut instead of palm heel strike
Ground - Choke from the Side

ADVANCED CLASS (A1)
Thai Pads - 5 rounds of 1 minute with 20 second rest; these rounds should be ALL OUT with no rest; do as many combinations as possible during the 1 minute
Absorbing: body shots, both attack both defend, with gloves on

Drill: Find Your Partner
Knees - talk about Muay Thai clinch
Knees - emphasize round knees
Drill: slow work, defender makes regular knee; after the first knee, the attacker blocks, so the defender makes a round knee to the ribs instead
360 Defense -- add counterattacks and Muay Thai clinch

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A1)
Hook Punch
Combination: Right Cross/Left Hook
Hook Punch -- focus on liver shot
Combination - Right Cross/Liver Shot
Bearhug Front Arms Free - Neck Leverage
Drill: Defender makes Right Cross/Left Hook; Attacker blocks and grabs with Bearhug Front, Arms Free; Defender makes the defense with neck leverage

ADVANCED (A1)

Focus Mitts: Left Punch/pivot right/Right Cross/Left Hook
Focus Mitts: Left Punch/slip left punch/Right Cross/Left Hook
Focus Mitts: 2 rounds of 3 minutes; last 30 seconds of each round should be non-stop straight punches.

BEGINNER CLASS (A1)

Ground Position (Back)
Ground Position - Front Kick
Drill "Up and Down Gauntlet": Partner holds pad. Defender beings with Straight Punches and Hammerfist Forward; on instructor's command, the Defender and partner go down to their knees as the Defender continues to punch; on the instructor's command, the Defender then lies on his back and partner stands over him while the Defender continues to punch; on the instructor's command, the partner then moves down toward the Defender's feet and the Defender gives kicks. The drill then moves in reverse, with the Defender getting to his knees, then to his feet. He should be striking the entire time. Alternate with partner, do two rounds.

Focus Mitts: Combination #3 -- add Headbutt Forward

Drill: eyes closed, attacker pushes Defender; Defender responds with Advancing Front Kick

I just wanted to apologize for not getting a week's worth of lesson plans out in advance. I had the best of intentions, but time and scheduling has made it difficult to do. I still hope these daily plans are useful to you!

BEGINNER CLASS (A1)
Palm Heel Strike
Drill: Palm Heel Strikes Across Room -- partner backs up a little with each strike; HOWEVER, two or three times the partner stops and yells at the striker to punch harder and faster for a flurry of punches
Knees
Combo: Left Palm Heel Strike/Right Knee
Choke Front (1 hand)

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A1)
Focus Mitts -- 3 rounds of 2 minutes
Headlock From Side
Ground - Kick Off From Guard
Ground - Headlock Side Going Backward
Drill: partner #1 makes Headlock Side Going Backward; partner #2 turns in toward partner #1 and shrimps into Guard; partner #2 then makes Kick Off From Guard

ADVANCED CLASS (A1)
Thai Pads Opposite Stance - 2 rounds of 2 minutes
Gun Side Front of Arm
Headlock, Spinning Inward
Drill: Gun of Headlock

BEGINNER CLASS (A1)

Wrist Releases as part of warm up

Straight Punches

Drill: Belt Drill (groups of 3; one person punching, one person holding pad, one person holding belt around puncher to offer resistance); 2 rounds each person!

Front Kick Vertical Target

Knees

Elbows

Distance Continuum:  Front Kick Vertical Target, Groin Kick, Straight Punch, Knee, Elbow -- make this combination slowly to learn how to move from distance to short range

Drill: distance continuum done at full speed, on instructor command

 

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A1)

Focus Mitts: combinations 1-4, emphasize movement in between combinations; 3 rounds of 2 minutes each

ADVANCED CLASS (A1)

General Striking to Pads

Self Defense review -- all chokes from lower levels

Fall Break Back

Barricade Drill: form a barricade 2 or 3 lines deep; a person with a pad waits on the other side; the defender must first make a fall break, then get up and immediately defend a choke; after defending, the defender must break through the barricade and strike the target until the instructor calls time.
