WARMUP DRILL: Slow & GO! Punches
Groups of 2, Striker, Padholder. Striker begins in fighting stance, tracking pad a slight distance away. On instructor’s “GO!” Striker bursts forward sending all out Straight Punches. Return to tracking on “RESET!”

Defense versus Straight Punch
DRILL: 3 Postion Punches
Groups of 2, Striker, Padholder. Striker sends all out Straight Punches, transitioning to the appropriate position based on cue “UP!”/Standing, “KNEES”/Kneeling, “BACK”/Mounted.
Wrist Releases
DRILL - FINAL:
Groups of 2, determine A/B. Both begin facing each other performing whatever exercise is assigned. Instructor yells “A/B” indicating the initial attacker. The attacker grabs the others wrist (must grab mirror image, not cross-body). Defender sends Straight Punch Low, Attacker defends, then Defender uses wrist release if necessary. Reset based on exercise cued.

INTERMEDIATE (B3)
Basic Takedown Defense (Spinning on Centerline)
DRILL1:
Groups of 2, Attacker, Defender. Attacker stands in front of Defender with pad. Attacker charges in attempting to place pad to Defender’s hips. Defender defends, spins and finishes with Knee burst, throwing away and running to “exit” the instructor has indicated. Return to spot and reset.
DRILL2:
Groups of 2, Attacker, Defender. Defender neutral, eyes closed. Attacker chooses any angle and walks through the Defender holding pad across chest. Once being pushed, the Defender recognizes the angle, orients as necessary to clinch, control and send Knee burst, throwing away and running to “exit” the instructor has indicated. Return to spot and reset.
NOTE: It is important the Attacker walks through as if the Defender is not even there, DO NOT stop applying pressure just because the defense has begun.
Outside Defenses 1, 2, 5
DRILL:
Groups of 2, Attacker, Defender. Defender neutral. Attacker can send Straight Punch or shoot in. Defend accordingly.
Rear Choke w/ Pull
DRILL - FINAL:
Groups of 3, Defender, Attacker A, Attacker B. Attacker A can send Straight Punch or shoot in. Attacker B randomly applies Choke Rear w/ Pull to ATTACKER A. Repeat for time and rotate.

DRILL:
Groups of 3+. One defender, others are potential attackers. Attackers in line in front of Defender. Defender closes eyes/turns and Attackers decide who is attacking. Defender gets set. Attack with 360, defend/counter and repeat for time.

DRILL - FINAL:
Groups of 3. Defender, two Attackers, one with Stick. Defender eyes closed/neutral. Attackers setup in random positions. Defender opens eyes and defends against stick attack or 360 depending on position and orients to stack against other Attacker.

Round Kick
Tombstone combos 1-4. Pad holder calls for round kicks randomly on both legs. Single kick for each call in round 1. Double kick for each call in round 2. Triple kick for each call in round 3.
Choke from the front (1-handed)
Drill: Circle-of-death. 1 defender, rest of class is attacking. Attackers may either choke from the front or hold tombstone to call for continuous punches or round kicks.
Intermediate (B3)

Back Kick
Drill – 1 striker, 4 kick shield holders. Striker stands in the middle of kick shield holders and stays facing the same direction during the entire drill. Kick shield holder verbally get striker's attention and striker delivers either a front, side, or back kick to the pad holders.
Bearhug from front (lifting)
Drill - Drill: Circle-of-death. 1 defender, rest of class is attacking. Attackers either bearhug from the front (lifting), hold kick shields to call for side kicks & back kicks or perform any Level 1 static choke (front, side, or rear).

Drill - Focus mitt work (bare handed strikers). Partners free work with focus mitts (include bobbing, weaving, & slips). Strikers practice setting up their take downs with strikes. Safety note: Strikers are responsible for keeping their pad holder safe during the take down. They must be sure the landing area is clear.
Headlock from the side, spinning inward

Drill - A/B drill. Half the class is group A, other half is group B. Group A stands in passive stance with eyes closed. Group B attacks anyone in Group A with headlock from the side spinning inward, or neck break. After both groups go once, reset and include regular Level 2 headlock from the side to ensure that defenders are responding appropriately to the attack occurring.

Congratulations to Heather Rider, this month's Featured Instructor of the Month! Heather is the lead instructor at New Mexico Krav Maga, the only Krav Maga Alliance affiliate in New Mexico. Heather has been a fitness trainer and instructor as her only job for over fifteen years. She was a reebok master trainer and was featured in many magazines such as Self, Glamour and Shape. While living in New York City and Los Angeles, Heather taught step, boot camp, spinning and body shaping classes.
In 2001, in Los Angeles , Heather found a whole new way to stay fit and to get safe by taking her first Krav Maga class. Heather instantly loved krav maga and eventually started teaching bag classes at Krav Maga Alliance in Culver City.
In 2010 Heather moved to NM and searched for a Krav Maga school. When she found out that there was none she decided to get certified to teach. Since then, three of her students have become Alliance certified and one has become certified to teach kids krav.
New Mexico Krav Maga regularly holds women's self defense seminars to raise money for women's shelters. They also hold week long camps for kids in the summer and spring break. Heather enjoys hiking, teaching spinning and punching her punching Bob for exercise!

Drill - groups of 3 with 2 striking shields. Striker starts on one pad doing forward hammerfist combinations while other pad holder positions themselves to striker's left or right, holding for a side hammerfist. The 2nd padholder says "go" and the striker turns, delivers a side hammerfist, and continues with forward hammerfist combos.

Ground - Side mount knee to belly (disengage)
Drill - Striker begins striking a heavy bag or working focus mitts. A partner positions a ground dummy or tombstone (indicate where the "head" is) and shouts "go." The striker turns, runs to the pad and starts delivering strikes in side mount. On the "up" command, the striker disengages via knee to belly and resumes striking in their original position

Defender starts on the ground (laying on stomach) with their eyes closed. Pad holder moves anywhere in the room. Defender; on instructors signal, eyes open, get up, locate and advance towards the pad holder with non- stop strikes. Attacker; makes choke from the side. Defender; fast and aggressive defense!

Strikers spread out around room neutral/eyes closed, roaming Padholders. Padholders give a pad push and “shoot” in trying to tag pad to Striker’s hips. Striker stops takedown attempt with Clinch and sends 3-4 knees. Reset.
360 Defenses
DRILL:
Same as above. However, after pad push, Padholder can either “shoot” in for Clinch/Knees or throw the pad away and attack with a 360.
Knife - Downward Stab
DRILL:
Groups of 2, Defender, Attacker with knife tucked into rear waist line. Attacker sends 360 attack occasionally reaching back to grab/attack with knife. Defend accordingly.
DRILL - FINAL:
Same as above with pad push, but pad holder now can now attack with “shoot”, 360, or knife stab.

Inside Defense vs. Right Punch (1-counter)
DRILL:
Defenders spread out around room fighting stance/eyes closed, roaming Attackers. Attackers give a verbal cue and send a Right Straight Punch. Defend, finish and reset.
Advancing Front Kick from Neutral:
DRILL:
Groups of 2, Striker, Padholder. Padholder begins just outside of kicking range and Striker performs and Advancing Front Kick. Padholder continues moving back slightly after each kick in order for Striker to determine both optimal, and maximal, advancing capability.
Advanced - Gun 2 Hand Cupping
Advanced - Gun Front Kneeling
DRILL - FINAL:
Defenders spread out around room neutral/eyes closed, roaming Attackers. Attackers give a verbal cue and either present gun while Defender is standing or order Defender to knees. Defend as necessary and reset.

DRILL:
Defenders spread out around room neutral/eyes closed, roaming Attackers. Attackers cue by pushing Defender. Defend as necessary and reset.
Trigger Sparing 3:
Defenders spread out around room neutral/eyes closed, roaming Attackers. Attackers cue by pushing Defender, eventually throwing a Right Straight Punch. Defend accordingly and begin regular sparring. 30s.
