Drill: Introduce the concept of shelling up

Drill: using Inside Defense, defend 4 palm strikes, then shell up against further palm strikes and move away.

Knees --- use both Framing Position and Muay Thai Clinch (plum)

Drill: using Inside Defense, defend 4 palm strikes, ten shell up against further palm strikes, close distance for control and give knees

Headlock from Behind

Drill: in groups of three; do the drill as above, but at any time the third person can attack the PUNCHER with Headlock From Behind

 

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A2)

Focus Mitts: 2 rounds of 2 minutes

Inside Defenses with Counter Attacks (v. left, v. right with 2 counters, v. right with 1 counter)

Back Fall Break

Ground - Side Control

Ground - Hip Escape from Side Control (either pull guard or kick away)

Drill: attacker makes Left or Right Punch, defender practices defenses and counters; at any time, attacker can say "Down!"; defender makes Fall Break; attacker jumps into Side Control; defender does Hip Escape, kicks off, and gets back up.

 

ADVANCED CLASS (A2)

Sparring Drills: Partner A makes low round kick (left or right), defender checks and makes two counters; switch after 2 minutes

Sparring Drill: Partner A makes any punch (left or right), defender blocks and makes two counters; switch after 2 minutes

Sparring: 2 minute rounds

Palm Heel Strikes
Drill: Groups of 2 (partners should be about same size and hight), Small shield; Non stop Palm Heel Strikes, on instructors signal "GO", striker Fireman or Piggy back carries pad holder to the opposite end of the room and back, and continues with strikes.

Drill: Groups of 4-5; 90 seconds, One defender, non stop attacks.

Drill: A/B Drill- Strikes from the mount position on one end, and Inside Slap Kicks on the other.
Reverse Headlock Standing
Ground- Trap and Roll (quick review)
Drill: Groups of 3; defender; Strikes from the mount, 2nd person safely tackles defender off the pad and mounts them, defender; escapes the mount and gets up, 3rd person, then immediately makes Reverse Headlock. Repeat.

ADVANCED CLASS (A2)

Knife- Defense v. Downward Stab (work both sides, and off angle)
Knife- Defense v. Upward Stab (work both sides, and off angle)
Drill: defender eyes closed, attacker gives a verbal signal- Knife- upward and downward stab, include off hand and off angle.

Part II- R-Uppercut, R-Cross, L-Hook, R-Cross
1-1 Minute Round- Put Part I & II together in a relatively fast, non stop continuos pattern.

Drill: Defender with their eyes closed, attacker makes gun threat from front using off hand, or orders defender to get on their knees and makes gun threat from kneeling position.

BEGINNER CLASS (A2)
Elbow 4 & 5
Turn and face drill: 1 striker, 1 tombstone pad holder. Striker stands in passive stance with eyes shut. Pad holder jars them with the tombstone and holds for either elbow 4 or 5. Striker looks to identify threat, delivers appropriate elbow then turns and faces pad holder to follow up with several strikes as quickly as possible.

Drill: Repeat drill from above. Pad holders may now opt to use headlock from behind as well. Once complete, pad holders should go and attack someone else

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A2)
Outside slap kick

Bearhug from Behing Arms Free
Drill: Group of 3. 1 pad holder, 1 striker, and 1 attacker. Pad holder holds for outside slap kicks. Striker delivers appropriate kick as quickly as possible. Attacker randomly bearhugs striker from behind (arms caught or free). Striker defends, finishes with combatives and then returns to drilling slap kicks. Note: Attacker should feel free to sometimes trap one arm and leave the other free. Safety note: Tombstone pads or kick paddles are best, focus mitts can be used but kicker should not deliver full power.

ADVANCED CLASS (A2)
Review 360 defense with counters
Knife – defense vs. back slash
Knife – defense vs. forward slash
Knife – left handed attacker (forward & backward slash)
Drill: Group of 3. 1 focus mitt holder, 1 striker, 1 attacker. Striker and focus mitt holder free work on pads. Attacker randomly approaches striker from the side/behind and starts slashing forward and backward constantly. Striker must defend as quickly as possible and follow-up with combatives to neutralize attacker before returning to pad work. Attackers should attack someone different each time switching to left handed attacks at random. Note: It is not necessary for strikers to perform “textbook” disarm 100% of the time in order for the threat to be deemed neutralized. Throwing a volume of strikes while maintaining control of the knife wielding arm is sufficient.

BEGINNER CLASS (A2)

Thai Pads - 3 rounds of 3 minutes

Drill: defender starts on ground; attacker grabs foot; defender tries to make foot grab defenses; if he fails, the attacker pulls leg to the side and takes side control; defender makes hip escape

ADVANCED CLASS (A2)

Ground - def. v. full mount, wrists pinned (snow angel)

Knife Downward Stab (v. left and right handed attacker); react from a kneeling position.

Gun Front from a Kneeling Position

Drill: groups of three; defender defends against full mount, wrists pinned; as he is getting up, he must defend against gun or knife

Beginner (A2)
Movement- Fighting stance, Moving Forward, Left, Right, Back (drill both both sides)
Punches- Left/Right Combination
Drill: "Go" & "Time"- On Instructors signal "Go", non-stop punches, on Instructors signal "Stop", off the pad, move around
Choke from Behind with a Push
Headlock from Behind
Drill: Groups of 3; defender works straight punch combinations on pad (i.e.: R/R/L, L/R/L. etc..) attacker; makes Headlock from Behind or Choke from Behind with a Push.

Intermediate (A2)

Inside Defense v. Left/Right
Bearhug from Behind Arms Free
Drill: Defender; Eyes closed, attacker; makes a Bearhug from Behind Arms Free or gives a verbal signal, makes Left/Right combination
Ground- Escape form Guard (gouge and stack)
Drill: Groups of 3, One large pad; defender; escape from Guard, stands up, pad holder walks towards defender, defender makes a Defensive Front Kick followed by non stop punches until pad holder calls "Time". Reset!

Advanced (A2)
Drill: Striking Transition- non stop striking drill; the attacker starts in a standing position, striking on pad; then he drops to his knees, then to his back, then again back to his knees, then standing.. but never stops striking! Alternate with partner, three rounds each
Knife- defense v. downward stab- (work both sides & different angles)
Ground- Def. v. Full Mount, hands pinned
Drill: Groups of 3 and a small pad; Defender starts on the ground and defends against Full Mount, Hands pinned, stands up, non stop strikes on pad, attacker; gives a verbal signal, Knife- downward stab- (either side, off angle)

Thai Pads: 3 rounds of 3 minutes -- last :30 seconds of each round, make 10 strong round kicks with each leg (no rapid taps, the kicks must have power)

Side Kick Review

Plucking/Row Defense v. Medium Side Kick

Redirecting Defense v. High Side Kick

Light Sparring: try to include side kicks into your sparring rounds

Beginner (A1)

Choke from Behind

Drill: Groups of 3; 1 focus mitt holder calling for drill from earlier; 1 Striker/Defender; 1 Attacker who can apply Choke from Behind at any time. After applying defense, Striker immediately returns back to focus mitts.

Intermediate (A1)

Warm-up Drill: Ground and Pound Relay; Groups of 2; one at one end of the mat, one mounted on curved kickshield. On “GO!” mounted person sends all out strikes to pad. Partner runs to opposite end of gym performing 3 burpees, then runs down to relieve striker.

Headbutt Forward

Headbutt to the Side

Combatives Drill: Striker begins in neutral with eyes closed. Pad holder gives verbal cue at very close range from either the side or the front. Striker performs appropriate headbutt, then when pad holder takes a step back, follows up with mid-range Level 1 combatives, i.e. punches/palms, or hammerfist to side followed up by punches/palms until pad holder calls "TIME!"

Advanced Technique: Gun from the Front

Drill: Ground and Pound Relay Remix; Groups of 2; one partner mounted on curved kickshield; the other partner standing at other end of the mat in neutral with eyes closed with a training gun and another curved kickshield next to them. Striker throws 20 Ground and Pound strikes to kickshield then sprints to partner and can either verbal cue for Combatives Drill from earlier OR make Gun from the Front attack. Defender makes appropriate defense and then sprints to kickshield while Attacker takes their place.

Advanced (A1)

Axe Kick

Jumping Front Kick

Drill: Target recognition on curved kick shield; 2 punches, FKG, Round Kick, Axe Kick, or Jumping Front Kick

Drill: Add sprawls

Knife – threat, def. to dead side

Knife – threat, def. to life side

Drill: A/B Drill: Have defenders standing with their backs to a wall. Roaming attackers can apply Knife – threat, def. to dead side, Knife – threat, def. to life side, or any beginner/intermediate technique (especially Choke from the Front Against a Wall!). Defenders make sure to make space away from wall after defense.

**Bonus: can establish cones or landmarks in the room as exits/safety points and have defenders sprint to exit after making defense.**

BEGINNER CLASS (A1)
Elbows 1-3
Straight and round knees
360 defense
Drill: Defender starts eyes closed. Attacker bumps with kick shield for elbows 1-3, followed by knees until “time” is called, or alerts the defender and attacks for 360s.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (A1)
Belt Drill

Focus Mitt Combination: Left, Right, Left Hook, Headbutt forward
Ground- Kick off from guard
Ground- Choke from the Side
Drill: Choke from the Side Ground- make space, kick attacker away; get up and work focus mitts (using today’s combo) then drop down and restart.

ADVANCED CLASS (A1)
Focus Mitts – Right Cross/Liver Shot
Focus Mitts – Right Cross/Live Shot/Left Hook
Body Absorption – light work
Toe The Line! – stand across from partner, two lines, both attack with body shots; then move on to next person.
Gun Side Front of Arm – work both sides

BEGINNER CLASS (A1)

Drill: A/B drill with straight punches or groin kicks

Choke from the Side

Drill: eyes closed, choke from either side

Drill: pad holder moves around and calls out punch combinations OR makes a low kick

 

ADVANCED CLASS (A1)

Thai Pads: Combo #9 (Left uppercut/Right Cross/Left Hook) with Right Knee

Thai Pads: after the knee, pad holder shoots and striker must sprawl

Gun from the Front

Gun from Behind (Touching)

Drill: gun techniques hold packages, bags, etc. in hands; ALSO, gunman moving, pointing the gun in different directions so that the defender must wait for an opportunity.
