Drill: Monkey in the Middle -- groups of 3; person in the middle makes Palm Strikes to a target until pushed from either side; when pushed, the person in the middle makes Hammerfist to the Side, then continues with Palm Strikes, etc. Do TWO rounds in a row, minimum 45 seconds; give the person 30 seconds to rest.

C is a roaming attacker and can tap any B from behind with pad. B throws Elbow 4, turns and follows up with 4 knees, before returning to resume hand combatives on A.

Drill: Same as above, except C can also drop pad and apply Choke from the Side.
Intermediate (D3)
Side Kick (with and without advance)
Drill: Side Kick Competition! Have 2-4 of the largest people in class holding the curved kick shield with the rest of the students divided evenly into lines in front of them. Everyone tries to get the pad holder to have to move back with Advancing Side Kick. Rotate the big guys in for a couple of tries as well.
Drill: Groups of 3. A/B/C. A’s are holding for B’s, 10 straight punches, 10 FKG, 5 round kicks right, 5 round kicks left, 5 sprawls into a knee. Repeat. C’s can verbal cue for Side Kick or Side Kick with Advance depending on distance, followed up by 4 hand combatives.
Outside Defense 1-5
Drill: Groups of 3. Defender in the middle in neutral position. Attackers make a verbal cue and throw a punch from the front, slightly off angle, or from the side. Defender performs one of the Outside Defense 1-5 with follow up combatives before returning to neutral. Emphasize unpredictable timing between attackers making punch.

Spinning Outside Slap Kick
Drill: Focus Mitts: Combinations 1-10. Add Spinning Outside Slap Kick to any combination ending in a hook (3, 7, 9)
General Def. v. Medium to High Kicks
Gun – from behind at a distance
Drill: Groups of 3. A/B/C. A is attacking B with Medium to High Kicks. B defends with General Defense v. Medium to High Kicks. C is a roaming attacker and can attack any B at any time with Gun – from behind at a distance.

Ground - Getting Up (from side position)
Circle-of-Death: 1 defender, rest of class attacks. All attackers have kick shields. Defender starts in side position on the ground, attackers surround defender. Defender delivers side kick from the ground to kick shield. Once attackers receive 2-3 kicks on their pad (depending on class size), they must yield and give space. Once all attackers have yielded, defender gets up as quickly as possible ready to continue the fight.

Drill: Working in pairs. 1 attacker, 1 defender. Defender stands in passive stance, eyes shut. Attacker verbally/physically gets defender's attention and holds a kick shield for a side kick or a tomb stone for a heel kick (making sure to follow up with a few combatives). During the drill instructor yells "Down!". Defender fallbreaks and attacker immediately gets into mount. Defender must get out of mount as quickly as possible, attackers may throw light palm heel strikes to distract defenders.

Drill: Group of 3. 1 attacker, 1 striker, 1 defender. Defender in fighting stance, striker throws single outside straight punches. At any time attacker may bearhug striker from behind (arms free). Striker must defend (leverage on finger), finish with combatives, then resume throwing outside straight punches at defender.

Disorientation Drill: Group of 3. 1 focus mitt holder, 1 striker, 1 attacker. Focus mitt holder and striker free work. When instructor yells, "Go!" striker spins in place as fast as possible to get dizzy. When instructor yells "Fight!" striker immediately returns to pad work. Attacker may present striker with gun from behind at a distance at any time during the drill.

Introduction to Thai Pads: 2 minute rounds with 30 seconds rest
Round 1: Pad holder calls a number 1-4. Striker throws that number of straight punches, always beginning with the lead hand.
Round 2: Pad holder can also call 1 Body-4 Body. Striker’s last punch now ends in a Straight Punch Low
Round 3: Pad holder can also call 1 Kick-4 Kick, and add an opposite leg round kick to the punch combination
Inside Defense
Inside Defense v. Straight Punch Low
Drill: 10 for 10, attacker can throw a Straight Punch or Straight Punch Low. If attacker can make contact with defender’s stomach before the Inside Defense v. Straight Punch Low is completed, the defender does 3 burpees. Have students change partners multiple times.
Intermediate (D3)
Side Kick (with and without advance)
Back Kick
Drill: Warming up with Target Recognition: 1) 2 punches to elbow #1, 2)Front Kick to DW Hammerfist, 3) Round kick to same leg knee
Drill: Groups of 3: Monkey in the middle, (approximately 1 minute unless students not getting fatigued), non-stop palm strikes on padholder #1, Padholder #2 holding for Elbow 3 OR Back Kick OR side kick, striker returns to palm strikes on padholder
Bearhug from Behind with a Lift
Drill: Monkey in the middle from earlier but now second padholder can apply Bearhug from Behind with a Lift.
Advanced (D3)
Conditioning Drill: 3 minutes on the clock: 10 hand combatives, 10 FKG, 5 round kicks right, 5 round kicks left, 2 burpees, switch pad. Have partner groups compete for who can get the most rounds in the 3 minutes.
Drill: Punch one direction, kick in another
Full Nelson – finger strip
Long Gun from Behind, touching (both sides)
Drill: Groups of 3, 1 defender, 2 attackers. Defender stands in neutral with eyes closed. Attackers can apply Full Nelson – finger strip OR Long Gun from Behind, touching (both sides) OR can pick up pads, position themselves with defender in the middle, and verbal cue for Punch one direction, kick in another.
