Choke from the Front with a Push

Drill: Tueller Drill
Groups of 2. Padholder/Attacker, Striker/Defender.
Defender in neutral with eyes closed. Attacker can perform choke from the front with a push OR
call “DOWN!” Defender will go to ground and close eyes. On verbal cue (name, “HEY!”), defender opens eyes and begins in Ground Back Position. Padholders line up in front of them from various distances. When Striker begins to get up, Padholder begins moving forward. When Striker gets to feet, Striker sends portion of combo above beginning with Punches, Elbow or Clinch/Knees depending on distance of Padholder OR Padholder can drop pad when very close and apply Choke.

Intermediate (D2)
Bobbing/weaving
Defense v. High Front Kick (redirect)
Partner drills; Boxing gloves and shin guards on
Round 1: Using gloves as focus mitts, A calls punch combinations 1-10. At any time, A can throw a hook with either hand at B. B defends by bobbing and weaving. If hook is to rear side of B’s body, B counters with a combination 6. If hook is to lead side of B’s body, B counters with a 7.
Round 2: A adds in attacking with a High Front Kick. B redirects and counters with a 6 or 7.
Ground – Guard Reversal.
Drill: In addition to everything from Round 2, A calls “TAKEDOWN!” B either does back fall break or sits down safely. A gets in B’s guard and B perform Guard Reversal. Both stand up and return to drill.

Advanced (D2)
2 Front Kicks with a Switch
Drill: All basic combatives on kick shield for target recognition. On instructor’s call of “DOWN!” Pad holder drops pad and Striker mounts for Ground and Pound until instructor calls “TIME.” On instructor’s call of “SPRINT!” striker throws non-stop 2 Front Kicks with a Switch until they hear “TIME!” and then return back to target recognition.
Gun from Behind, Touching
Drill: Groups of 3; 1 curved kick shield holder; 1 attacker; 1 striker/defender. Striker is making combatives on pad exactly the same as drill from earlier. At any time, Attacker can apply Gun from Behind, Touching, Defender makes defense and returns back to pad. Remind Attacker to sometimes make attack when Defender is mounted on pad for Ground and Pound Strikes. Although the defense is the same, Defender must now stand as they burst following redirect.

BEGINNER CLASS (B2)
Basic Takedown Defense (changing height, moving feet)
Knees (regular and round)
Control Position Drill: 1 kick shield holder, 1 striker. Striker keeps kick shield holder in control position and delivers hard knees constantly. Pad holder moves in random directions (including level changes) trying to throw striker off balance.
Choke from the Front with a Push
A/B Drill: Group A attacks, group B defends. All defenders in a line, eyes shut, passive stance. Attackers either choke from the front with a push or grab a kick shield and “chest bump” defenders. Once defenders complete skills with combatives, they should reset for the next attack.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (D2)
Bobbing/Weaving/Slipping
Defense vs. High Round Kick (reflexive)
Defense vs. High Round Kick (2 & 3 points of contact)
Defense vs. High Round Kick (covering)
Sparring Drill: 1-for-1, partners throw any combination 1-4 with a high round kick. Receiver slips, bobs, and weaves punches and uses appropriate defense for kick.
Free Sparring: 15 second rounds, 10 seconds to find a new partner. Goal is to land as many strikes in 15 seconds as possible. Safety Note: Treat this sparring like shoulder tag. The point is to land strikes not deliver power shots.

ADVANCED CLASS (D2)
2 Straight Knees with a Switch
Gun from the Side, Behind the Arm
Gun from Behind (touching)
Drill: Roaming Gunman. Groups of 2. 1 striker, 1 kick shield holder. Striker delivers combative combinations to pad including 2 straight knees with a switch. 1 set of partners are designated gunmen and randomly attack any striker with either gun technique listed above.

Drill: groups of 3; one person attacks with 360; defender defends 360; third person makes Headlock from Behind against the 360 ATTACKER whenever they want to.

Basic Clinch Defense (previously called Basic Takedown Defense)

Drill: Combination 8 or 9; pad holder closes distance; striker uses Basic Clinch Defense; disengage, repeat

Drill: defender's eyes are closed; attacker gives a verbal signal and then attacks with a slash from different distances; defender must kick or make hand defense

Drill: partner moves around, then gives command to strike; defender makes Front Kick Vertical Target, then continues with Palm Strikes until pad holder calls time

Drill: as above, but third person can make Headlock from Behind

Focus Mitts: Left/Right combo
Slipping punches -- emphasize shoulder roll to cover chin
Focus Mitts: Left/Right/slip left/Right
Defense v. High Round Kick (2 or 3 points of contact)
Defense v. Front Kick (plucking/rowing)
Fight Drill: focus mitt holder moves around; either calls out combination above OR makes a high front or round kick

ADVANCED CLASS (D2)
After warm up, review round kicks and side kicks, emphasis on higher kicks
Axe Kick
Arm Bar -- use axe kick on the ground after arm break, then kick away and get up
Simple Takedown -- person on the bottom pulls guard, makes Arm Bar, then gets up

Beginner Class (B1)

Movement- Fighting Stance Moving Forward., Left, Right, Back

L/R Combination- Review

Combination: Straight Punch Low, L/R Combination

Inside Defense v. Straight Punch Low

Drill: Groups of 2; Defender eyes closed; pad holder bumps defender and holds for today’s combination OR gives a verbal signal and makes a Straight Punch Low.

Drill: Non-stop self-defense techniques, One Arm Shoulder Throw when possible

Beginner (B1)

Straight Punches

Knees (emphasize switch knee and returning to a good stance)

Elbows 1, 6, and 7

Drill 1: Partners; 1 curved kick shield per group. Pad holder calls a number between 1 and 4. Striker throws that number of straight punches, always beginning with lead hand, followed by an opposite side knee.

Drill 2: Same as Drill 1, but after knee, pad holder can hold for elbows 1 and 6 if pad is to chest, or elbow 7 if pad held at waist as for downward hammerfist.

Choke from the Front with a Push

Final Drill: A/B Drill. A’s standing with eyes closed. B’s are roaming attackers and can tap or verbal cue and call a number as from Drill 2, or apply Choke from the Front with a Push.

 

Intermediate (D1)

Partners; Curved kick shield

Round 1: Basic Target Recognition for 2 straight punches, round kick, Front Kick Groin, Defensive Front Kick, and Knee.

Round 2: Have strikers with their backs to the wall and curved kick shield holders in front of them. Pad holders hold for Basic Target Recognition from Round 1. When instructor yells “SPIN!” striker clinches pad holder in Thai clinch position, throws two knees and spins them on centerline to get away from the wall, and throws non-stop knees until instructor calls “TIME!”. Reset. As many phases as you want and then switch.

Round 3: Same as Round 1 except now Pad holder has back to wall and instead of

“CLINCH” call  “TIME!” (For safety, so pad holder has pad in appropriate position) then call “KICK OFF!” Striker throws Defensive Front Kick and tries to sprint to the other wall. Pad holder drops pad and tries to chase them and tag them with two hands. If striker is caught before touching wall, they do 5 burpees. If pad holder doesn’t catch them, 2 burpees.

Ground – Headlock Side, weight forward

Ground – Headlock Side, weight backward

 

Advanced (D1)

Scissor Round Kick

Thai Pads

Round 1: Free work; all known combinations using punches, kicks, elbows, and knees

Round 2: Opposite stance

Round 3: Replace all combinations using the round kick with Scissor Round Kick

Advanced Gun—from Kneeling Position

Drill: Partners; 1 gun and 1 curved kick shield per group. Partner with curved kick shield is mounted on pad for non-stop Ground and Pound strikes. Partner with gun is on other end of mat and must do 4 burpees, then sprint to partner and hold for Advanced Gun—from Kneeling Position. Striker makes defense and partners switch roles.

BEGINNER CLASS (B1)
Combination: Left/Right/Left Knee
Combination: Left/Right/Left/Right Knee
Elbows 4-7
Drill: eyes closed; pad holder strikes the defender from various angles behind and the sides; defender gives the appropriate elbow, then turns to give additional strikes.

Drill: Back Kick from either side, then turn and make additional counters
Choke from Behind (review)

Drill: stand facing wall; from behind, attacker pushes with pad then holds for Back Kick OR makes Choke from Behind Against Wall

Drill: eyes closed, either side kick or Stick Overhead

BEGINNER CLASS (B1)

Straight Punches: Left/Right/Right/move out of range as pad holder tries to touch with tombstone pad (be sure the punches have power, then move away)

Drill: groups of 3; one person makes Straight Punch Low; second person defends; third person attacks puncher with Headlock from Behind

Defense v. Choke Full Mount

Defense v. Headlock Full Mount

Drill: non-stop punches; on command of "down," the defender makes a fall break; second attacker jumps on top in full mount and makes Choke or Headlock; defender defends, gets back up, then continues punching

Thai Pads (3 rounds of 3 minutes: focus on power; fewer reps per round are OK as long as maximum power is generated in each combo)

Drill: attacker makes any combination of 2 punches (straights and hooks); defender defends and makes 1 counterattack; do several rounds with different partners

Drill: attacker makes any combination of 3 punches (straights and hooks); defender defends and makes 2 counterattacks; do several rounds with different partners

Note: if your class already has experience and you have more time, include uppercut and uppercut defense

 

ADVANCED (D1)

Overhand Right Punch

Combo: Left/Right Straight/Left/Overhand Right

Side Kick Review - emphasize using forward leg for Side Kick from fighting stance in a fighting context (rather than self defense)

Pucking/Rowing Defense v. Medium Side Kick

Sparring: include Side Kicks and Overhand Rights

 

BEGINNER CLASS (B1)
Straight Punch with Advance
Straight Punch with Retreat
Drill: pad holder starts at punching range, moves deliberately forward or back; puncher must react with an advance or retreating punch
Front Kick
Headlock from Behind
Drill: pad holder moves around the room, offering targets for front kick, or straight punch with advanced; at the same time assign 2-3 attackers to move around, giving headlock from behind to the strikers at random

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (D1)
Muay Thai Pads
Round 1- Cross, Hook, 2 Right Round Kicks, Right Knee
Round 2- Cross, Hook, Cross, 2 Left Round Kicks, Left Knee
Round 3- Put the two combos together (Cross, Hook, 2 Right Round Kicks, Right Knee,
Cross, Hook, Cross, 2 Left Round Kicks, Left Knee)
Choke from Behind with a pull
Drill: Basic combos on pads, Choke from behind with a pull

ADVANCED CLASS (D1)
2 Back Kicks with a switch
Drill: Groups of 3, Large Shield, Focus Mitts; Combinations on focus mitts, 3rd person walks towards striker from behind with a large shield, gives a verbal signal, striker; 2 Back Kicks with a Switch.
Advanced Gun- under chin, in mouth, grabbing hair etc.
Advanced Gun- from Kneeling Position
Dril: Punching or Kicking, gun under chin, or gunman from distance orders defender to kneel, then approaches; defender must make the gun defense from a Kneeling position
