This is John Whitman testing the initial movement of Gun Defense on the Ground with someone on top, at point blank range. Although it’s not a real firearm (we’re crazy, but we’re not stupid), it fires paint or rubber pellet rounds at high velocity, and when they hit you, it hurts.

Thumb down and forward. That’s all it took to release the strap and draw the weapon from its holster. Thumb down and forward. But I couldn’t do it in the roughly 1.7 seconds it took for the attacker to cover twenty-plus feet. I had to abandon the weapon and go right to Krav Maga’s regular [...]

Hand Position During Front Kick: Up or Down? I want to talk about hand position during a front kick. Normally, I am reluctant to get so far into the minutiae of a technique. When analyzing my own Krav Maga training, I often think of the mantra “hands, body, feet.” That is the order of movement for many techniques in the system (except, of course, kicks), and for practically ALL the weapons defenses.
