KM Alliance Open Policy
I’d like to state plainly to everyone that KM Alliance has established the Open Policy. In fact, it’s one of the founding principles of the organization. The Open Policy simply means this: affiliates have a right to be involved in other organizations. In fact, we encourage it. From our point of view, school owners have [...]

In case you think we don’t test our techniques…
This is John Whitman testing the initial movement of Gun Defense on the Ground with someone on top, at point blank range. Although it’s not a real firearm (we’re crazy, but we’re not stupid), it fires paint or rubber pellet rounds at high velocity, and when they hit you, it hurts.

Testing the Success of Our Certification Courses
As we wrap up the first year of certification courses under the KM Alliance banner, I want to take a moment to assess the past and anticipate the future, primarily to ask: has it been successful? The answer, so far, has to be a definite “yes.” With the exception of one course (which I posted [...]

Defense v. Downward Stab Off Angle
Knife is always difficult. In the best of circumstances, controlling the knife is extremely hard. This angle makes it even harder. Two approaches are shown here, but you should ALWAYS consider defending and countering, then breaking away and running or looking for a shield or weapon. This was discussed during the lesson, but missed by [...]

The Alliance, Year One
The Krav Maga Alliance has grown much faster than we anticipated. It really started as an informal training program for close friends. We just conducted a 2-day seminar in Austin, Texas, with the great people at Fit and Fearless (www.fitandfearless.com). The first day focused on basic self defense and non-compliant attackers. The Newness Factor
Thumb down and forward. That’s all it took to release the strap and draw the weapon from its holster. Thumb down and forward. But I couldn’t do it in the roughly 1.7 seconds it took for the attacker to cover twenty-plus feet. I had to abandon the weapon and go right to Krav Maga’s regular [...]

Hand Position During Front Kick
Hand Position During Front Kick: Up or Down? I want to talk about hand position during a front kick. Normally, I am reluctant to get so far into the minutiae of a technique. We are in danger of becoming too “martial arty” and dogmatic if we discuss exact positioning, except in those rare instances where [...]

Hands, Body, Feet
When analyzing my own Krav Maga training, I often think of the mantra “hands, body, feet.” That is the order of movement for many techniques in the system (except, of course, kicks), and for practically ALL the weapons defenses. The hands move first; then the body defense is made, then the feet move. These movements [...]

Knife on the Ground
