Lesson Plans Thursday, September 20, 2012

September 20, 2012

Today's lesson plans continue the "Fighting Injured" theme.  One set of drills deals with a different type of injury -- losing your breath due to a punch to the stomach or, as we say in English, "getting the wind knocked out of you."  Since we obviously cannot hit our students that hard, we will simulate the feeling as closely as possible.

Always remember, SAFETY FIRST. If your students cannot due the drills below, modify or discard them. No one should pass out while doing these drills.

BEGINNER CLASS (B3)

Palm Strikes

Hammerfist to the Side

Knees

Choke From Behind

Drill - Simulated Loss of Breath: student holds breath while punching for 20 seconds; at the end of 20 seconds, a third person makes Choke From Behind; the defender must defend (and now breath!), then return to punch again. Do 3 rounds.

Palm Strikes with one hand tied to side

Choke From Behind with one hand tied (defend so that the good hand is on the inside, nearer to the attacker)

Drill - Simulated Loss of Breath -- do the drill as above, but now with one hand tied.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS (B3)

Straight Punches with one arm tied

Elbow #3 with one arm tied

Bearhug Behind, Arms Free (arms are both untied for now)

Drill - Simulated Loss of Breath: student holds breath while punching for 20-30 seconds; at the end of 20-30 seconds, a third person makes Bearhug From Behind; the defender must defend (and now breath!), then return to punch again. Do 3 rounds.

Bearhug From Behind, Arms Free (but with one arm tied down); emphasize moving the body, even if you cannot strike with one arm

Drill - Simulated Loss of Breath: as above, but with one arm tied.

ADVANCED CLASS (D3)

Combatives to Pad -- front kicks, round kicks, punches, elbows, knees, etc.

Ground - Side Control

Ground - Escape Side Control

Drill - Simulated Loss of Breath: student holds breath while making combatives for 20-30 seconds; at the end of 20-30 seconds, a third person says "Down!"; the defender must go down, and the third person takes Side Control; the defender must defend (and now breath!), then return to punch again. Do 3 rounds.

Ground - Escape Side Control with one arm tied (this will be difficult for many of our students!)

Drill - same as above, but with one arm tied
